Péter Zoltán Berke

Obtained the M.Sc. degree of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE) in Mechanical Engineering in 2003 and the Ph.D. title of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Engineering Sciences in 2008. I am currently Visiting Professor at the Universidade Fedeal do Ceará (Brazil) and Scientific Collaborator of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium). The main orientation of my research activities is the computational modelling of complex phenomena and the development of advanced purpose built numerical tools in three main research axes: (i) the behaviour of complex structures, (ii) the nonlinear behaviour of complex and multi-phase materials, and (iii) the development and use of multi-scale numerical techniques which allow the investigation of the interaction of material and structural behaviours. Since the beginning of my academic career I am heavily involved in teaching and between 2007 and 2009 I was a full time teaching assistant (50% research and 50% teaching duties). My network of collaborators comprises, among others, the Materials Technology group (Prof. M.G.D. Geers) of the Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands), the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (Prof. A.V. Solov yov) of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University (Germany), the Molecular Foundry, Imaging and Manipulation Facility, Materials Sciences Division (Prof. D.F. Ogletree) of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA), the COBO Department (Prof. J. Vantomme) of the Royal Military Academy of Belgium, the Architectural Engineering Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Belgium) and two departments of my current home university, the Université Libre de Bruxelles. In Brazil, I am actively collaborating with the Civil Engineering Department (Prof. R.A.M. Silveira) of the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, with the Instituto de Física (Profa. M.C. Salvadori) of the Universidade de São Paulo. I have obtained the funding of my postdoctoral research project from the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique F.R.S. - FNRS of the French-speaking community of Belgium for 3+1 years, with an additional 20.000 of functioning costs. I participated in the setup of a European Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate project (the coordinator is the UP Catalunya) with 8 partner universities and several industrial partners.This project grants funding for an estimated 164 Ph.D. fellows for the consortium for a span of 8 years.

    Multi-scale adaptive modelling of quasi-brittle fracture using semi- discrete numerical approaches for geomaterials, Descrição: The main goal of this postdoctoral research project is the development of a novel computational method of relatively low complexity and high efficiency for the fracture of heterogeneous materials. Two scales are distinguished in the proposed methodology: (i) the fine scale of the material microstructure with a continuum type description and (ii) the structural scale on which a discrete description of the material is adopted. The scale coupling is inspired from computational homogenization and domain decomposition techniques. The structural discrete equilibrium formulation is fed by fine scale computations of the material microstructure. This novel multiscale approach has been prototyped for two dimensional problems involving quasi brittle material behavior and periodic microstructures, with the ultimate goal of extending it to random heterogeneous microstructures (e.g. concrete). This project included a one year long research period at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (September 2010 - September 2011).
