  Modelado de la distribución espacial de la precipitación media mensual de los Andes venezolanos, Descrição: Information on the spatial distribution of precipitation is a valuable tool for management, planning, assessment and conservation of resources, but is often not available in the mountainous areas, given the scarcity of information available and the relationship between precipitation and topography. The Venezuelan Andes merges a high biodiversity and a rapid human population growth, thus spatial information on the geo-temporal patterns of the precipitation would be valuable. We generated interpolated layers of the monthly average rainfall for the Andes of Venezuela, with a resolution of three arcsecs, using precipitation data collected between 1959 and 2000, from 314 climatological gauges managed by the Venezuelan Government and other institutions, as well as a digital model of elevation from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. Using language R, version 3.0.3, we applied eight spatial interpolation methods used by similar studies such as regression, inverse distance weighted, hybrid, ordinary kriging of regression with kriging of the residuals, kriging with external drift, random forest, hybrid random forest ordinary kriging the residual and thin plate splines. We compared the results obtained through cross validation, linear regressions between observed and data interpolated, observation of macroclimatic patterns, comparison of the basic statistics of the precipitation average annual and visual analysis of the layers interpolated for the Merida State. These comparisons included layers of monthly average rainfall to the best resolution currently available (30 30 arcsecs) that provides WorldClim. We found that the weather stations are arranged conveniently close to randomness in the lat-lon plane, and its vertical distribution conforms to the elevation of the study area. The set of validations performed indicate that layers interpolated with regression have the best performance. They also exceed in performance available on WorldClim layers.
