Conceptual Metaphors for life in English and Pashto, Descrição: Traditional theories of metaphor consider metaphor a rhetorical device based on similarity and requires a conscious effort and special talent to shape words. This view was strongly challenged by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) offered by Lakoff and Johnson in Metaphors We Live By in the 1980. CMT claims that metaphor is understanding one thing in terms of another. It is an unavoidable inherent part of human conceptual system, reasoning and speech ? ARGUMENT IS WAR and TIME IS MONEY. This study, firstly, applies the Conceptual Metaphor Theory to identify, interpret and analyze metaphorical linguistic expressions in Pashto to establish conceptual metaphors for life in Pashto language and culture. Secondly, it attempts to assemble metaphor for life discussed by Lakoff, Turner and Johnson in their works to demonstrate that how various conceptual metaphors are used in the English language and culture for understanding the abstract and rich concept of life. Thirdly, it categorizes the metaphors for life in the Pashto language into orientational metaphors, structural metaphors and ontological metaphors. Lastly, this study compares conceptual metaphors for life in English and Pashto to show common conceptual metaphors for life in two different languages and cultures. .. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: / Mestrado profissional: (1) / Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Imran Khan - Coordenador / Shuja Ahmad - Integrante.
