Catherine Helen Graham

My research is in two main areas: empirical work focused on landscape and behavioral ecology, with an emphasis on how human-altered landscapes affect ecological processes; and bioinformatics/geographic information systems modeling to examine how current and historical environmental factors affect patterns of species distribution. At a landscape scale I examine how landscape- and local-level factors influence patterns of habitat use by animals. Particularly, I am interested in bridging the gap between landscape and behavioral ecologists, who generally work at completely different scales. This disparity has resulted in a lack of empirical landscape-oriented behavioral information with which to develop a broad perspective on fragmentation effects. At a regional scale I am integrating museum data, environmental GIS layers, distributional niche models and phylogenetic information to better understand processes that may have led to current species distribution patterns. I am focused on tropical systems and currently collaborating with researchers from Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Australia and Brazil.

Developing the predictive ecology of plant-animal interactions across space and time, Descrição: In the face of the alarming pace of recent environmental change on Earth we lack the tools to accurately predict how biodiversity and ecosystem services will respond. One key gap in knowledge that limits our predictive ability is uncertainty concerning how the biotic interactions that are essential for species persistence and ecosystem services (i.e., pollination) will change. Developing a predictive science of species interactions requires integrating evolutionary, biogeographic and ecological mechanisms acting at different spatial and temporal scales. We will use a hierarchical cross-scale approach, combining phylogeography, network ecology, statistical modelling and experiments, to disentangle the mechanisms governing species richness and mutualistic interactions in tropical hummingbirds and their food plants. Hummingbirds and their food plants are an excellent model system because they are highly diverse, highly specialized, logistically feasible to study and a well-studied. Our specific objectives are to (1) evaluate the influence of multiple factors, such as trait-matching, environmental conditions, relatedness and abundance, on network structure; (2) quantify how and why interaction beta-diversity (i.e., reflecting both change in species composition, and in interacting partners) changes across elevation gradients in each of three biogeographic regions with distinct evolutionary histories (Costa Rica, Ecuadorian Andes, Brazilian Atlantic Forest); (3) evaluate the importance of multiple factors, such as trait-matching, environmental conditions, relatedness and abundance, on species interactions and network structure; and (4) develop a predictive model of species interactions and evaluate its performance using cross-validation and experimentation. Together, these tasks will provide new insight into one of the central enigmas in ecology and evolution, namely, why species diversity and its interaction architecture change from one place to another. Consequently, we will also be able predict how species interactions will change from present to the future, which is essential for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Mestrado acadêmico: (2) . , Integrantes: Catherine Helen Graham - Coordenador / VARASSIN, ISABELA GALARDA - Integrante / THAIS BASTOS ZANATA - Integrante / ANDREA VANESSA NIETO ORELLANA - Integrante / ANALI BUSTOS - Integrante.
