Homeschool Childrens Motor Development Levels and Physical Education Program Impact on Fitness and Physical Activity Levels, Descrição: The child will be asked to complete the FitnessGram fitness test, TGMD2 motor skill test, wear a watch for a week, and complete 3 questionnaires: a) Physical Activity Questionnaire to assess physical activity participation levels; b) Childrens Attraction to PA (CAPA) Scale to assess participants attraction to physical activity; and c) Perceived Physical Competence Scale (PPCS) for Children (Harter, 1982) to assess childrens self-perceptions of physical competence. The FitnessGram will take around 60 minutes to be complete. The TGMD2 will take around 15 minutes. The questionnaires should take 20 minutes to be completed. The researcher will ask my child to complete the FitnessGram test and questionnaires before (on Sept. 29, 2017) and after (on Dec. 05, 2017) my childs participation in the Physical Education for Homeschool Children program held at Coastal Carolina University. The completion of the questionnaires and TGMD2 will take place during free study time and will not interfere will my childs participation in the program. Children who take part will learn about his/her fitness and motor skill development levels, and may improve their communication and cognitive skills. The researcher also hopes to learn something that may help other children improve physical activity participation, attraction to physical activity, and perceptions of physical competence.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (9) / Doutorado: (2) . , Integrantes: Nilo César Ramos - Coordenador / Anderson dos Santos Carvalho - Integrante.

Physical Education Impact on Homeschool Children Physical Activity, Descrição: Homeschooling has steadily increased in the last 30 years in the United States, and in 2010 it was estimated that 2 million children were homeschooled (Ray, 2011). The literature suggests that physical education (PE) opportunities are limited for homeschoolers (Welk, Schaben, & Shelley, 2004), which is concerning given the many positive benefits of PE on lifelong physical activity (PA) and health. While research is limited on the physical activity and fitness levels, BMI, diet, and other factors impacting health among homeschoolers, even less is known about the effect of PE on such components. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of a PE program on homeschool childrens PA levels, attraction to PA, and self-perceptions of physical competence. Method: A 10-week (one 50-minute session per week) PE program was offered to 15 homeschool children through a course in the PE education program by a university in the central region of the United State. Each week a group of three or four pre-service teachers developed a lesson plan with the assistance of the course instructor and taught the lesson to the children. Program content included weekly non-traditional activities such as capoeira, tinikling, camping, and orienting. Sessions were planned to provide skill development and moderate to vigorous PA. Seven girls and five boys (N=12) ages 7 to 11 who participated in the program completed three questionnaires at the beginning and end of the program: (a) Physical Activity Questionnaire for older children (PAQ-C; Kowalski, Crocker, & Donen, 2004) to assess physical activity participation levels; (b) Childrens Attraction to PA Scale (CAPA; Brustad, 1993) to assess participants attraction to PA; and (c) Perceived Physical Competence Scale for Children (PPCS; Harter, 1982) to assess childrens self-perceptions of physical competence.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Nilo César Ramos - Coordenador / Timothy Baghurst - Integrante.

Middle School Students' Perceptions of PE Teacher Credibility, Descrição: Background/Purpose: Physical education (PE) teachers can profoundly impact students experiences in PE (Bailey, 2006), including students engagement and skill development (SHAPE America The Society of Health and Physical Educators, 2014), which ultimately may promote active healthy lifestyles (Graham, Holt/Hale, & Parker, 2013). Consequently, the preparation and development of effective PE teachers appears to be essential. Source credibility theory (Hovland, Janis, & Kelley, 1953) proposes that PE teachers power of persuasion, and as a result, effectiveness, can be increased when students perceive them as credible. However, the literature on PE teacher effectiveness is remarkably bereft of studies on PE teacher credibility. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate middle school students perceptions of PE teacher credibility. Method: Participants were 8 girls and 8 boys in the 6th and 8th grades (N 32) from a rural school located in the Midwestern United States. Students were selected to participate based on their (a) PE skill level (high or low), and (b) ability to communicate as adjudicated by their PE teacher. To reduce bias in the assessment of participants, the PE teacher was frequently informed that the study was about the credibility of PE teachers in general. Data were collected in the school setting during a 2-month period (more than 60 contact hours) through the use of: (a) observations, (b) field notes, (c) open-ended questionnaire, (d) student drawings, and (e) group and (f) individual interviews.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Nilo César Ramos - Coordenador.

2014 - 2015
Brazilian Elementary Students' Perceptions of PE Teacher Credibility, Descrição: Physical education (PE) teachers are considered to be instrumental in leading children to live an active and healthy lifestyles (Graham, Holt/Hale, & Parker, 2013; Pate et al., 2006). PE teachers can positively impact the experiences students have in PE (Bailey, 2006), including skill development and engagement (Society of Health and Physical Educators [SHAPE America], 2014). Source credibility theory (Hovland, Janis, & Kelley, 1953) posits that PE teachers effectiveness can be increased if students perceive them to be credible. Surprisingly, very few studies have investigated PE teacher credibility. Exploring students perceptions in different cultures may assist the understating of this complex construct. The purpose of this study was to investigate how Brazilian elementary students perceive PE teacher credibility. Method Eight girls and eight boys in 3rd and 5th grades (N=16) from an urban private school located in Southern Brazil were selected to participate in the study according to their PE skill level (high and low) and aptitude to communicate as evaluated by their PE teacher. To reduce bias in the evaluation and selection of participants, the PE teacher was informed that the study would investigate the credibility of PE teachers in general. Data collection occurred over a 30-day period in the school setting and totaled over 30 contact hours. Data were generated using (a) observations, (b) field notes, (c) an open-ended questionnaire, (d) student drawings, and (e) group and (f) individual interviews. Source credibility theory (Hovland et al., 1953) and constructionism provided a theoretical framework for the study. Data trustworthiness was established through reflexivity journal/audit trail, peer debriefer, and triangulation.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Nilo César Ramos - Coordenador.

Elementary Students' Construct of Physical Education Teacher Credibility, Descrição: The purpose of this study was to investigate students perceptions of PE teacher credibility. Eight high- and low-skilled students from grades 3 and 5 were selected from a school employing a PE teacher holding a National Board Certification. Data were collected in the school setting utilizing observations, field notes, an open-ended questionnaire, student drawings, a photo elicitation activity, and group and individual interviews. Source credibility theory (Hovland, Janis, & Kelley, 1953) and Symbolic Interactionism (Blumer, 1969) were used to make meaning of students descriptions of PE teacher credibility. Data were analyzed inductively using Miles and Hubermans (1994) four-stage analysis. In the eyes of the students, a credible PE teacher Looks Like One,Practices What She Preaches, and Is an Awesome Pedagogue. Data trustworthiness was ensured through peer debriefer, reflexivity journal/audit trail and triangulation. Implications for both current PE teachers and PETE programs concerned with teacher effectiveness are discussed.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Doutorado: (1) . , Integrantes: Nilo César Ramos - Coordenador / Bryan A. McCullick - Integrante.
