  ?Nachhaltigkeitsaspekte der Goldgewinnung und des Goldrecyclings? (Aspectos da sustentabilidade da mineração e reciclagem de ouro), Descrição: Como quase nenhuma outra matéria-prima, o ouro acompanha a história da humanidade, desencadeia emoções e desejos representando simbolicamente sucesso e riqueza. Contudo, com a extração de ouro estão ligados a problemas adversos como a miséria, fatiga, labuta e destruição, ou seja, de modo cientifico, são circunstâncias e aspectos que tangem o social, ambiental, econômico e ecológico, que cada vez mais também tem sido questionada criticamente e ceticamente para o usuário final. Qual é a balança ecológica ? ciclo da vida de mineração de ouro? Quais condições de trabalho prevalecem na mineração de ouro? Há algum ?Fair Gold? ou ?Green Gold?? Um foco socialmente e ambientalmente importante é a extração de ouro na mineração em pequena escala ou mineração artesanal. Ela ainda ocorre com métodos, como na Idade Média e polui o meio ambiente devido a liberação elevada de mercúrio, tais como por exemplo na floresta amazônica no Brasil. A indústria de processamento de ouro, assim como os consumidores querem ser informados dessas circunstâncias. Além disso, o ouro também é um exemplo interessante para outros recursos. Nos mercados mundiais, ocorreram nos últimos anos, flutuações significativas nos preços das matérias-primas. Houve discursos e preocupações sobre escassez de recursos naturais, de metais críticos, por exemplo, dos "terras-raras". O ouro ? ao contrário das "terras raras" ? é realmente raro e não é um destes metais críticos. Ele é reciclado com uma porcentagem alta porque: Quem quer joga fora ouro? Refinarias, como muitas em Pforzheim na Alemanha, recuperam ouro a partir de jóias, mas também a partir de lixo eletrônico, onde há cada vez mais peças e contatos de ouro. A indústria do ouro local tem, portanto, em princípio, uma vantagem competitiva ecológica que não é bem conhecida: ela recicla amplamente e tem pouca participação das importações de ouro provenientes de regiões problemáticas no mundo. O ouro também poderia ser um exemplo para outros metais, ou seja, com fluxos onde os ciclos de matérias-primas serão fechados. O principal problema é a logística, pois os resíduos devem ser recolhidos e concentrados, de modo que a reciclagem fica rentável em termos de custo, mas também energeticamente ou ecologicamente. O projeto ?NaGold? visa precisamente estes problemas. Ele é editado pelo ?Instituto de Ecologia Industrial? na Universidade de Pforzheim, especializada em análise de energia e fluxo de materiais em ?Avaliação do Ciclo da Vida ? ACV? (Life Cycle Assessment ? LCA). No projeto, o impacto social e ambiental, aspectos ecológicos e econômicos da mineração de ouro devem ser identificados e avaliados. Além disso será efetuada uma comparação com a reciclagem de ouro. O projeto envolve alguns parceiros da joalharia e indústria do ouro de Pforzheim e a Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará ? UFOPA ? em Santarém. O Ministério Federal de Ensino e Pesquisa ? BMBF ? está a financiar o projeto na Universidade de Pforzheim, como parte da ?Pesquisa em faculdades?. A Universidade espera deste o reforço da sua pesquisa interdisciplinar, em especial no domínio da sustentabilidade, e uma cooperação maior com a economia regional.   Analise de transição do garimpagem para mineração profissional na Província Aurífera do Tapajós, Descrição: Após 40 anos de exploração intensa de ouro a região do Tapajós encontra-se hoje em uma fase de transição. Os depósitos superficiais de fácil acesso estão esgotando, colocando assim em cheque a continuidade da exploração via métodos não-industriais (garimpagem). No entanto as características da geologia regional indicam que vários desses depósitos superficiais são associados a fontes de ouro primário, que se tornaram alvo de interesse de empresas mineradores nacional e internacionais. Essas empresas procuraram nos últimos cinco anos através das mais diversas formas alianças com os donos de garimpo, a fim de viabilizar uma prospecção mais detalhada desses alvos. Há dois anos atrás a primeira empresa de mineração (Mineração SERABI) começou a exploração de ouro na área de um antigo garimpo e outras estão em fase de negociação. Perante desses fatos novos colocam se os seguintes objetivos de investigação: A partir de uma análise histórica da produção garimpeira e usando informações sobre as formações geológicas regionais e locais, identificar áreas de garimpo que possam se tornar alvo de extração industrial de ouro. Analisar as diversas formas de associação / colaboração entre os donos de garimpo e as empresas de mineração, sobretudo sob o ângulo da sua contractualidade, dos conflitos gerados e das suas conseqüências para a mão-de-obra nos garimpos. Artisanal mining activities provide income to the world's poorest populations and ethnic minorities; a great majority of the miners being woman and children. For every gram of gold recovered, about two grams of mercury are released into the environment - often resulting in the death of men, women and children and in a permanently ruined habitat. The relevant simplicity and effectiveness of the technology, known as amalgamation, mask its dangers. This process can be improved with procedures using inexpensive and highly efficient devices that can be manufactured locally and at low cost. The objective of the programme is to replace mercury amalgamation with new technology while improving the income of the miners through more efficient recovery, increasing knowledge and awareness and providing policy advice on the regulation of artisanal gold mining with due consideration for gender issues.   Laptev Sea System, Descrição: Russian-German Cooperation: Laptev Sea System 2000 The Arctic, in particular the large Siberian Shelf comprise some of the most sensitive elements of the global environment, which are considered to respond rapidly to global climate change. Climate models and paleoclimatic reconstructions indicate that differences in, e.g., size of continental ice caps and in sea-ice distribution influence the global ocean circulation. However, our knowledge of the climate system in the Arctic is until now very limited making it difficult to predict possible global environmental changes. The Siberian hinterland of the Laptev Sea is of particular interest, because it is an important fresh water source for the Arctic Ocean, and large amounts of sea ice are formed on the Laptev Sea shelf, thus providing an important link to the earth's global climate system. A detailed evaluation of marine and terrestrial paleoclimate records from this region offer important information for the better understanding of the causes, impacts, and feedback mechanisms which determine the Arctic climate system today. Objectives The multidisciplinary research project 'Laptev Sea System' was launched by Russia and Germany to study the environment of Siberian Arctic and its present and past role in global climate.
