Gabriela Olmos Antillon

Veterinarian and researcher. Doctorate in animal production, animal health and animal welfare by University College Dublin (2008). Postdoctoral fellow at the Royal Veterinary College (2009-2011) and Bristol University (2011-2013). Applied researcher at the Veterinary Epidemiology Unit, Department of Clinical Science, SLU - External resource for the Laboratório de Etologia Aplicada e Bem-Estar animal at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Brazil - My background is in Veterinary Medicine, Applied Animal Behaviour & Welfare with expertise in Mixed methodology (QNT+QLT research methods) I am keen to understand the factors related to animals and the animal community health & welfare. To do so, I frame my research under a mixed methodology (i.e. qualitative and quantitative research components). These allow me to maximise insight; on the one hand by the identification of risk factors around health and welfare problems but on the other gain insight into the social perceptions or barriers of farmers and animal health consultants.

Understanding antibiotic use decision making in contrasting countries and animal species - On the road to reducing antimicrobial resistance for all, Descrição: Unrestrained use of antibiotics increases the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Our project investigates what the elements are that drive a country, veterinary clinic or a farm to reduce the use of antibiotics and prevent AMR.

Our project goal is to provide a situated understanding of antibiotic prescription decision-making. In other words, how different working realities, culture, knowledge and the type of animal itself derive different antibiotic prescription needs/practices among veterinarians and owners. For that, we will focus on contrasting species including food production animals (i.e. dairy cattle) and pets (i.e. dogs) in nations known for a low (i.e. Sweden) and high (i.e. Spain and Brazil) antibiotic use. We are thus providing the knowledge on how the veterinary profession reconciles practices in entirely different scenarios successfully identifying roads for improving their work and with that aiding in safe warding antimicrobials for all.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Gabriela Olmos Antillon - Coordenador / Hockenhull Joe - Integrante / Buller Henry - Integrante / Maria Jose Hötzel - Integrante / Emanuelson, Ulf - Integrante / Blanco Penedo, Isabel - Integrante / Bergvall, Kerstin - Integrante / Hagman, Ragnvi - Integrante / Belák, Sándor - Integrante / Moreno Romo, Miguel Ángel - Integrante / Albernaz-Gonçalves da Silva, Rita - Integrante., Financiador(es): Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development - Auxílio financeiro.

Extreme weather impacts on health and productivity of dairy cows, Descrição: The extreme weather in Sweden during 2018 had impacts on the Swedish dairy cows, both in terms of impaired health and decreased productivity. The impacts during the summer of 2018 was unusually large, but effects have been seen also during more normally warm summers. It is likely that it will become more common with such extreme weather conditions over time, and an increased knowledge about what can be done to increase the resilience of dairy production to such events is therefore imperative. The purpose of this study is to get better insight of what the elevated somatic cell counts, impaired fertility and decreased productivity in the summer are due to. The research will also investigate farmer preparedness to extreme weather conditions, their willingness to adopt mitigating actions and the economic effects. The results can provide a basis for advice to milk producers so they can minimize the problems. A lowered BMSCC during summer will lead to higher incomes for farmers and a better health of dairy cows, which in turn leads to a reduced antimicrobial use. With measures that can be applied to minimize the decline in fertility, our Swedish dairy cows will become pregnant more quickly and to a greater extent, which also enhance the milk producer economy and cow longevity. A maintained productivity, even during summers with extreme weather conditions, will support the possibilities for Sweden to have a reasonable proportion of milk and dairy products produced in the country.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Gabriela Olmos Antillon - Integrante / Emanuelson, Ulf - Coordenador / Haseeb, Ahmed - Integrante / Renee, Bge - Integrante / Ann-Kristin, Nyman - Integrante., Financiador(es): Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development - Auxílio financeiro.

, Integrantes: Gabriela Olmos Antillon - Integrante / Maria Jose Hötzel - Coordenador / Katia Medved Leite Nunes - Integrante / VILMAR FRUSCALSO - Integrante.

Antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance in organic dairy herds, Descrição: Goal: Our main hypothesis is that the use of antibiotics is lower in organic dairy herds than in conventional and that this is associated with a lower incidence of antimicrobial resistance. The project will a) quantify the use of antibiotics on farm level; b) identify patterns of antimicrobial resistance of indicator pathogens (Escherichia coli) in the gut flora of calves; c) study the attitude of farmers towards the use of antibiotics.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Gabriela Olmos Antillon - Integrante / Sjöström, Karin - Integrante / Fall, Nils - Integrante / Sternberg Lewerin, Susanna - Integrante / Emanuelson, Ulf - Coordenador.

Designed and executed a project investigating the welfare, health and production of dairy cattle in Irish pasture-based systems. The effects of three components were investigated: A) the animal genetic value, B) the stocking density and C) the management itself by comparing a pasture-based system with an indoor-housing TMR management. The health and welfare assessment required animal-based measurements, including gait analysis, hoof examination and trimming, assessment of production traits and grass intake measurements, among others. The experiments were focused on the peripartum period, peak of lactation and breeding season of a seasonal production system.

Designed and executed different dairy cattle behaviour trials. These trials included the fitting of monitoring devices (GRAZE, Gemini data-loggers), the use of remote monitoring systems (HEATWATCH) and direct behaviour observations.

Designed a research study protocol and applied to ethical committees and governmental licensing boards, establishing SOPs for animal based trials. Additionally, aided in a project to include hoof health into a new genetic profiling system for Ireland.

Collected blood samples to establish haematological, metabolic and acute phase response profiles. This included performing ELISAs on serum samples for cortisol and acute phase proteins (e.g. SAA and haptoglobin), among other metabolites.

Performed statistical analysis using SAS, MINITAB, SPSS and Excel. Disseminated the results in peer-reviewed journals and at national and international conferences. I was involved in various university seminars and department presentations. Co-supervised MSc projects and training of bachelor degree summer interns.
