  Impacts of Mechanized Agriculture on Smallholders and Landscapes in the Central Amazon Basin, Descrição: This project seeks to understand the environmental and social repercussions of smallholder displacement by mechanized soy farming in an important agricultural frontier near the city of Santarém in central Pará State, Brazil. Soybean agriculture has been practiced for many years in southern Brazil but more recently has crept north towards the Amazonian Biome. Establishment of soybean fields in the study area represents one of the first significant encroachments of mechanized farming into the tropical forests of the basin. It involved the recent and sudden arrival of capitalized farm interests, and the displacement of ~500 smallholder families. The proposed research seeks to uncover the manner by which properties once in the possession by smallholders were transferred to soybean farmers as well as the decision-making process that triggers destination. Did land transfer take place at a ?fair? market value? Or, did forms of coercion induce smallholders to sell ?short?? The research also addresses land changes associated with the process of regional soybean establishment. Thus, it will study both origin land change, namely the conversion of forest remnants and secondary regrowth on properties the smallholders sold, and destination land change, the indirect land use impacts of smallholders who migrated to new frontiers upon displacement. The project will undertake surveys of displaced smallholders and use them to describe the process of land transfer as well as the destination choices the smallholders made upon leaving their land.
