Álvaro Furlani Bastos

Alvaro Furlani Bastos is a former R&D Electrical Engineer and post-doctoral researcher in the Energy Storage Technologies and Systems Department at the Sandia National Laboratories, United States. He holds a BS (2014) in Electrical Engineering from the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil, and a MS (2015) and PhD (2020) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, United States. During his undergraduate studies, Alvaro was awarded the President Bernardes Medal as the highest-ranked student in his graduating class and participated in a one-year student exchange program at the Hanze Institute of Technology, The Netherlands, in 2012. He was also a recipient of the Science Without Borders Scholarship for Graduate School awarded by the Brazilian Ministry of Education. As a graduate student, he utilized quantitative models, data analytics, and machine learning techniques to analyze power systems data. He successfully developed multiple data applications, such as frameworks to: (i) detect both conspicuous and inconspicuous disturbances in voltage and/or current waveforms; (ii) accurately characterize voltage variation events; (iii) perform online and non-invasive condition monitoring of switched capacitor banks; and (iv) validate and improve the accuracy of synchrophasor measurements. During that time, he also led the lab sessions of the course Power Electronics Devices and Systems for nine consecutive semesters and had been conferred the Top Teaching Award in 2017 and 2019. Further, he was a summer intern in the Sensing and Predictive Analytics Group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), United States, in 2019. He also has experience on data analytics applied to energy storage systems, which were developed during his post-doctoral work. It included tasks such as: (i) performing feasibility studies and techno-economic analysis of distributed energy resources (commonly solar photovoltaic and energy storage systems) in the context of grid decarbonization; (ii) contributing to the development of QuESt, an open-source application suite for energy storage simulation and analysis; and (iii) assessing the applicability of energy storage systems for mitigating multiple types of power quality issues. He is an active member of the IEEE 1564 Voltage Sag Indices Task Force, which is currently working on the revision of the IEEE Std. 1564-2014. Further, he serves as peer-reviewer for multiple IEEE, IET, and MDPI journals and conferences, and has participated in panel sessions in multiple IEEE-sponsored conferences, such as SGSMA and PMAPS. His research interests lie in the broad area of data-driven and optimization-based techniques for transmission and distribution systems applications, such as automated root-cause analysis of power quality disturbances, integration of distributed and/or renewable energy resources for grid decarbonization, simulation and analysis of energy storage systems, and analysis of time-synchronized measurements for condition monitoring of power equipment. He has published his work in 20+ peer-reviewed conference and journal publications.
