  Estimating Southern Ocean seabird mortality from tuna longline fishing, Descrição: Subproject: Seabird density surface and associated error estimates. Incidental mortality (bycatch) in fisheries is recognised as the primary threat to seabirds at sea (Croxall et al. 2012, Phillips et al. 2016). Albatrosses and petrels are particularly vulnerable because they are long-lived and have delayed sexual maturity and low reproductive rates; this means that even small increases in adult mortality can lead to significant population declines (Delord et al. 2008, Croxall et al. 2012). Effective conservation of these highly mobile species ranging within and across ocean basins over the course of their lives is challenging because their distribution overlaps a wide range of longline fisheries managed by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs). In the last three decades, however, biologging technology has greatly improved our knowledge into movements and at-sea activity patterns of seabirds, helping to tackle some of the conservation problems. The main objectives of this project is to develop a protocol for the creation of seabird distribution maps (density surfaces) from tracking data, accounting for the uncertainty derived from untracked age/life history stages; apply the protocol developed here to all ACAP species with tracking data available in the Seabird Tracking Database; provide input (i.e., 5 x 5 degree maps representing the number of birds per grid cell with an error estimate) to be included in models of potential by-catch of seabirds in longline fisheries.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Ana Paula Bertoldi Carneiro - Coordenador / Maria Dias - Integrante / Ross Wanless - Integrante.

  Assessing extent of space use by seabirds, Descrição: How large is the area we need to manage for conservation? Identifying important areas for conservation at sea is challenging. Over the past decades, > 100 seabird species have been tracked with small loggers and protocols have been established to identify important areas from tracking data. However, seabird species differ in their foraging range and spatial aggregation patterns, so that species vary greatly in the size of areas that encompass important activity. BirdLife and the RSPB are currently reviewing the spatial distribution patterns of seabirds to assess the extent of marine areas that would need to be managed to conserve a given species.   BirdLife analysis of seabird bycatch in the Atlantic, Descrição: The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) is due to review the effectiveness of the seabird resolutions that require pelagic longline vessels to use seabird bycatch mitigation measures (i.e. Rec. 11-09, Rec. 07-07). Crucial to the establishment of Conservation and Management Measures to protect seabirds were analyses of fishing effort and seabird distribution - any future adjustments to seabird resolutions need to be informed by the best available tracking and fishing effort data, hence this data request. There are 7 steps planned for the ICCAT 2016 review. One of those is to use the latest data to analyse albatross and petrel distribution in the Atlantic Ocean and the overlap with ICCAT longline fishing effort. The purpose of this is to review areas and periods where there is high risk of seabird bycatch. The 2016 evaluation will inform any potential modifications to the ICCAT seabird resolutions and therefore has a significant impact on albatross and petrel conservation in the Atlantic Ocean. Overlap of effort and seabird distribution will be assessed by year and by quarter to characterise seasonal variations.   Seabird conservation measures in IATTC region, Descrição: The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) adopted in 2011 a Seabird Conservation Measure (Resolution C-11-02) to mitigate the impact on seabirds of fishing. Although the text of this Resolution followed at the time of adoption, and to some extent, best-practice recommendations for mitigating seabird bycatch in longline fisheries, recent research on the efficiency and applicability of bycatch mitigation measures has led to a revision of this best practice advice. The outcomes of recent reviews by the ACAP Seabird Bycatch Working Group have been already considered by most of the other tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (tRFMOs), who have revised their seabird conservation measures to reflect the latest best practice advice. The area of application of current IATTC Resolution C-11-02 was defined according with information on at-sea distribution of seabirds available until 2011. Now, and in order to introduce and propose a revised seabird conservation measure, BirdLife International and ACAP are working on the updating of seabird-fisheries overlap in the East Pacific Ocean.   New assessments of seabird data: proposal of new High Seas MPA in the OSPAR maritime area, Descrição: The OSPAR Bergen Statement of 2010 has emphasized that Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) provide an essential contribution to the protection of species, habitats and ecological processes of the marine environment. The importance of MPAs is reflected in OSPARs commitment to establish a well managed and ecologically coherent MPA network. BirdLife International has a commitment to promoting marine conservation globally, including on the high seas and in the OSPAR region. The BirdLife Partnership has developed collaborations with a number of national governments and international bodies to ensure marine Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) inform the creation of a network of MPA. For example, IBAs have directly informed the designation of Special Protection Areas within the framework of the EU Natura 2000 network and, most recently, many marine IBAs have been recognised in the CBD process to identify EBSAs. Progress has been made on the IBA analysis techniques and a sound and statistically robust methodology has been developed and has been successfully applied by scientists and managers all over the world. For many years BirdLife has been coordinating the compilation of seabird data on behalf of the wider seabird conservation community. In conducting this review of seabird tracking data, BirdLife has compiled tracks for 24 seabird species, representing over 2000 individual seabirds from 106 colonies across the Atlantic region. Based on data available and the robust analysis tools to identify key sites at sea, BirdLife, in collaboration with the seabird and marine scientific community, aims to assess new sites in the OSPAR area beyond national jurisdiction.   Foraging ecology, niche variation and individual specialisation of brown skuas (Stercorarius lonnbergi), Descrição: Using a combination of GPS and immersion (activity) loggers, behavioural observations, and both conventional sampling and stable isotope approaches to diet determination, the main objectives of this work are to examine diet of brown skuas from a colony in the South Orkney Islands, and investigate how this varies in relation to nest location, foraging behaviour, habitat use, adult quality (body size, condition, timing of breeding, chick growth rates, breeding success) and personality. The stable isotope data, together with behavioural observations from birds tracked with high resolution GPS and activity loggers, will help us to differentiate between the alternative foraging strategies and to identify specialisations. The carbon and nitrogen isotope data from different tissues, integrating prey ingested during different life-history stages will also provide information about long-term dietary consistency during the breeding season. By comparing these results with stable isotope ratios in feathers (which were grown during the previous nonbreeding season), we may reveal evidence for even longer-term consistency in trophic level, after excluding or accounting for differences in isotopic baselines (reflected in d13C). GPS tracking and immersion (activity) data, breeding variables, weights, morphological measurements, personality scores, blood and feather samples, and prey tissues to calibrate stable isotope analyses during breeding, have already been collected from brown skuas at Signy Island, South Orkneys (60°43' S, 45°36' W) during the austral summer of 2013/14. Some, but not all, brown skuas at Signy Island defend small feeding territories adjacent to penguin colonies (gentoo Pygoscelis papua, chinstrap P. antarctica and Adélie P. adeliae), whereas others defend larger feeding territories where they are thought to prey largely on small petrels. Although penguin eggs and chicks are the main dietary components at Signy Island, there are observations of fish being delivered to chicks, and the GPS tracking indicated that some breeding adults fed at sea. The existence of several alternative foraging strategies among the skua population at Signy Island therefore provides an excellent system for investigating consequences of diet choice, foraging location and specialisation, and the implications for reproductive performance. To our knowledge, this will be the first study comparing stable isotope ratios with fine-scale tracking data from the same individuals for a seabird predator-scavenger such as a skua or giant petrel during breeding. The only published study of fine-scale foraging movements of brown skuas (using GPS loggers but not including stable isotope or conventional dietary analysis) is of adults breeding at Bird Island, South Georgia where they feed mainly by scavenging seal carrion and placenta on beaches, and to a lesser extent by predation of other seabirds.   Foraging ecology, individual specialisation and long-term changes in population size of brown skuas (Catharacta lonnbergi) at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, Descrição: At Signy Island, South Orkney Islands, counts of brown skua pairs doubled and of south polar skuas increased greatly between 1958/1959 and 1982/1983. Although there was no census or monitoring of breeding success in the subsequent 20 years, anecdotal observations suggest the local populations of both species have since shown substantial declines, as have those of their main prey, Adélie and chinstrap penguins (which have been counted regularly).   Adding Value to Data: The Use of Visualization Tools, Descrição: Visualization tools create maps, tables, and graphs, and are used to make analyses of data accessible to a wider audience. Because data are compiled through the LaMNA (Landbird Monitoring Network of the Americas) process into a specific format, programs creating visualization tools can easily be produced and used on any spatial, time, or taxonomic subset of data. The latest tool created by the Klamath Bird Observatory-Redwood Sciences Laboratory Avian Data Center (ADC) is called Summary Plots and Analyses Tables (SPLATS), funded by a grant from Pacific Coast Joint Venture. The SPLATS visualization tool was created using the R open source software environment for statistical computing and graphics (http://www.r-project.org/). The tool contains two main functionalities: data exploration and output of graphics. The data exploration functionality creates a series of cross-tabulations between specific variables, which helps the analyst to assess data quality and explore the file contents. For example, before a species can be analyzed, an analyst might decide to explore what age and sex classes are present in the database and how to categorize them for a demographic analysis. The second functionality is the display of metrics in a graphic format which displays the requested information in an intuitive way. Specifically, it calculates for a species at one or more stations (grouped into ?regions?) within a time interval you specify (e.g., 7-, 10-, 15-, or 30-day intervals) various physiological and life history metrics, such as age ratio, sex ratio, average percent of skull ossified in young, mean fat scores, and others.   EO4wildlife: Platform for Wildlife Monitoring Integrating Copernicus and Argos Data, Descrição: EO4wildlife main objective is to bring large number of multidisciplinary scientists such as biologists, ecologists and ornithologists around the world to collaborate closely together while using European Sentinel Copernicus Earth Observation more heavily and efficiently. In order to reach such important objective, an open service platform and interoperable toolbox will be designed and developed. It will offer high level services that can be accessed by scientists to perform their respective research. The platform front end will be easy-to-use, access and offer dedicated services that will enable them process their geospatial environmental stimulations using Sentinel Earth Observation data that are intelligently combined with other observation sources. Specifically, the EO4wildlife platform will enable the integration of Sentinel data, ARGOS archive databases and real time thematic databank portals, including Wildlifetracking.org, Seabirdtracking.org, and other Earth Observation and MetOcean databases; locally or remotely, and simultaneously. EO4wildlife research specialises in the intelligent management big data, processing, advanced analytics and a Knowledge Base for wildlife migratory behaviour and trends forecast. The research will lead to the development of web-enabled open services using OGC standards for sensor observation and measurements and data processing of heterogeneous geospatial observation data and uncertainties. EO4wildlife will design, implement and validate various scenarios based on real operational use case requirements in the field of wildlife migrations, habitats and behaviour.
