Catchment scale landscape planning for water sensitive cities, Descrição: This project aims to derive a first order urban metabolism evaluation framework for the city region across urban, peri-urban and rural landscapes. This framework will be encapsulated within a whole-of-landscape planning and management city-region model that links cities ecologically and hydrologically to their region whilst accommodating the assessment of urban growth adapted to climate change. The project will ground this inquiry in statutory and non-statutory regional (catchment) scale planning processes.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (0) / Especialização: (0) / Mestrado acadêmico: (0) / Mestrado profissional: (0) / Doutorado: (0) . , Integrantes: Silvia Serrao-Neumann - Coordenador / Prof Darryl Low Choy - Integrante / Steven Kenway - Integrante / Marguerite Renouf - Integrante.

Climate Change Adaptation for Natural Resource Management in East Coast Australia, Descrição: This Project aims to foster and support an effective community of practice for climate adaptation within the East Coast Cluster regions that will increase the capacity for adaptation to climate and ocean change through enhancements in knowledge and skills and through the establishment of long term collaborations. The project is being undertaken under the auspice of the Australian Government s Natural Resource Management Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Research Grants Program (Stream 2), managed by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. The East Coast Cluster consists of the coastal Natural Resource Management (NRM) bodies in Queensland and New South Wales between Rockhampton and Sydney. The Research Consortium comprises: University of Queensland (Consortium leader); Griffith University; University of Sunshine Coast; CSIRO; New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage; and Queensland Department of Science, IT, Innovation and the Arts (Queensland Herbarium). . , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Silvia Serrao-Neumann - Coordenador / Prof Darryl Low Choy - Integrante / Melanie Cox - Integrante.

Strategic Action Plan for the Sussex Inlet Community - Improving coastal communities' resilience and adaptation to natural hazards through planning, Descrição: This project aims to derive a long term strategic Action Plan for Sussex Inlet, Shoalhaven City, NSW that will allow the local community to maximise their capacity to be better adapted and develop resilience to natural hazards and a changing climate. The purpose of the strategic Action Plan is to establish priority actions that will enable the community to successfully engage with existing and future planning processes of various levels of government and non-government agencies and organisation. This Action Plan will also allow the community to take opportunities as they present themselves in order to achieve outcomes that will promote a high degree of liveability for their area. The project also aims to strengthen the integration of urban and regional planning and emergency management sectors to inform policy development for improved resilience of human settlements to natural hazards. The development of a long term community strategic Action Plan for the Sussex Inlet (twenty to twenty-five years into the future) will lead to the identification of a series of prioritised actions that will have to be implemented over the life of the Action Plan in order to achieve its strategic vision and intents. An adaptive management framework will need to be designed and incorporated into the Action Plan to facilitate future upgrades and revisions to the Action Plan in the light of new science, improved knowledge and understanding, particularly with regard to climate change and the incidence of natural hazards. Additionally, through the development of the long term strategic Action Plan, we seek to address the following research questions to: (i) identify what conditions might be required for successful collaborative community self improvement planning initiatives, particularly leading to sustainable and resilient communities, which are well adapted to natural hazards and a changing climate; and (ii) evaluate and document a bottom-up, community initiated and led, visioning and strategic planning initiatives, seeking to address whole-of-community responses to future natural hazards. . , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Silvia Serrao-Neumann - Coordenador / Prof Darryl Low Choy - Integrante.

Coastal Community Resilience to Natural Hazards - are local councils prepared?, Descrição: This project aims to derive a long term strategic Action Plan for the Conjola District, Shoalhaven City, NSW that will allow the local community to maximise their capacity to be better adapted and resilient to natural hazards and a changing climate. The purpose of the strategic Action Plan is to establish priority actions that will enable the community to successfully engage with existing and future planning processes as well as take ad hoc opportunities in order to achieve outcomes that will promote a high degree of liveability for their area. The development of a long term strategic Action Plan for the Conjola District (twenty to twenty-five years into the future) will lead to the identification of a series of prioritised actions that will have to be implemented over the life of the Action Plan in order to achieve its strategic vision and intents. An adaptive management framework will need to be designed and incorporated into the Action Plan to facilitate future upgrades and revisions to the Action Plan in the light of new science, improved knowledge and understanding, particularly with regard to climate change and the incidence of natural hazards. Additionally, through the development of the long term strategic Action Plan, the research team seeks to address the following research questions: (i) to identify what conditions might be required for successful collaborative community self improvement planning initiatives, particularly leading to sustainable and resilient communities, which are well adapted to natural hazards and a changing climate; and (ii) to evaluate and document a bottom-up, community initiated and led, visioning and strategic planning initiatives, seeking to address whole-of-community responses to future natural hazards. . , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Silvia Serrao-Neumann - Coordenador / Prof Darryl Low Choy - Integrante.

Every state for themselves? Learning from cross-border regulatory instruments to support and promote climate change adaptation in Australia., Descrição: The impacts of climate change do not adhere to conventional governance boundaries. Floods for example do not stop at the state border, nor are storm surges contained within local government jurisdictions. Whilst this may appear self-evident, this inconvenient institutional truth poses considerable challenges to existing and deeply embedded governance frameworks. The emphasis of this 3-stage project is on identifying and collating the lessons learnt from key examples of innovative regulatory reform models, entities, authorities and mechanisms that have emerged to address the need for a cross-border approach to shared activities and resources. The implications of which are considered within the context of supporting and promoting climate change adaptation in Australia. The three stages include: an intensive literature review of key case studies in which cross border collaborations have been forged; a workshop and series of interviews with key stakeholders and end-users which focus on the Tweed Gold Coast case study featured in stage one; and the synthesis and dissemination of information uncovered in the first two stages.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Silvia Serrao-Neumann - Coordenador / Prof Darryl Low Choy - Integrante / Florence Crick - Integrante / Wendy Steele - Integrante / Leila Eslami-Andargoli - Integrante / Lila Singh-Peterson - Integrante / Patricia Dale - Integrante.

Improving adaptation of coastal communities through bottom-up approaches: a case study of the Cardwell community in North Queensland., Descrição: The Project aimed to explore how a bottom-up, community initiated and led, visioning and strategic planning initiative, could contribute to address sustainability and climate change adaptation challenges; and to identify what conditions would be required for successful collaborative community self improvement initiatives, particularly leading to sustainable and resilient communities, which are well adapted to natural hazards and a changing climate. This project adopted a scenario planning approach and data was collected through stakeholder workshops, participant observation and semi-structured interviews. In total, seven scenario planning workshops involving community members were held between March 2011 and November 2012. With an average participation of 15 people, workshops involved the collaborative development of an action plan to improve the strategic recovery from disasters for the Cardwell community.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Silvia Serrao-Neumann - Coordenador / Prof Darryl Low Choy - Integrante / Florence Crick - Integrante.
