Sebastiaan Frans Teunissen

Bas Teunissen, PhD in bio-analytical chemistry (University of Utrecht). Master of science in analytical chemistry (Free University, Amsterdam). During my bachelor and master study I studied high resolution fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy as well as on-line sample pretreatment of biological material. During my PhD I specialized in identification and quantification of drugs and their metabolites in biological material using liquid chromatography and various types of mass spectrometry. In collaboration with the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital / Dutch Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, analytical methods were developed to facilitate so-called personalized medicine for cancer patients. As a forensic scientist at the Toxicology laboratory of the Netherlands Forensic Institute I was responsible for the quality control and assurance of all methods within the laboratory. I performed method development and data processing of non-regular case work and data interpretation of toxicological screening in biological matrices. As a study director of research projects for the development of quantitative methods in whole blood and dried blood spots of illicit drugs I have been working together with prof. Graham Cooks at Purdue University which included a 3 week work visit at Purdue University where I worked on ambient mass spectrometry such as Paper spray mass spectrometry. Currently I am a post doctoral research fellow at Thomson Mass Spectrometry Laboratory at Unicamp in Campinas, Brazil under the supervision of prof. Marcos Eberlin. Here, I focus on the development of ambient mass spectrometry methods in forensic settings.
