  Life cycle analysis of cross laminated timber: increasing awareness and utilization of wood products in building community, Descrição: Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is part of a wood composite category called mass(ive) timber, and it is a driver of innovation not only inside wood industry, but also for the building industry. The design of CLT allows the industry to meet a higher range of specifications, sizes, grades, while maintaining or exceeding natural strength of solid wood. In addition, these products have desirable environmental attributes, and it fits right in as green or environmentally friendly product. CLT buildings are promoting a revolution for the construction market, and an increase in utilization of wood as a building material will help the building industry to reduce its carbon emissions and become an important player in the solution for climate change. However, the number one barrier preventing the building industry to increase utilization of CLT is knowledge, more specifically on its attributes and capabilities. There is a lack of accurate and technical information on performance, integrity, and health of CLT buildings. This project seeks to increase awareness and confidence level of architects, engineers, and builders to adopt CLT building. This project will develop protocols for onsite inspections and datasets based on field tests that will enhance safety and assessment of building integrity. With sound and readily applicable protocols that will provide technical information needed, higher adoptions rate of CLT inside the building community is expected and consequently, an increase in wood consumption and increase of competitiveness of wood products with other products such as concrete and steel.   Expanding Markets for timber industrial mats manufactured from hardwood species and cross-laminated timber (CLT), Descrição: The goals of this project are to (1) make CLT timber matts using hardwood species; and (2) test the natural durability performance of the new product. Most of the research on CLT is related to the mechanical property behavior of the panels. Softwoods are the raw material most used in the manufacturing process of CLT panels and the main application of these panels are for structural purposes. However, not much attention has given to biodegradation properties of this product and the potential of using different species other than softwood to produce CLT panels. In conjunction with Sterling Lumber and Superior Mat Company, this project aims to increase the consumption of low value hardwood and to create a new market for CLT panels. The market for CLT mats is growing faster than for architectural use. The consumption of CLT for buildings in NorthAmerica is around 45,000 m, while industrial mats consume 118,000m (Schmon et al. 2017).The project will determine the susceptibility of different industrial mats made with yellow poplar (YP) and oak (OK), bolted oak mat and compare with standard mats built with southern yellow pine (SYP). The knowledge obtained through this project will be provided to stakeholders in the wood industrial mats, hardwood lumber producers, wood products sales and marketing specialists. Outcomes anticipated from the results of this project is to improve and expand the use of hardwood species and create a new market for CLT, focusing on non-structural uses.   Evaluation of Decay Effect on Perpendicular to Grain Properties of Wood, Descrição: The objective of this project is to investigate the effect decay has on the tension perpendicular to grain of wood and to study the ability of nondestructive testing (NDT) to assess degradation on wood products. Southern yellow pine samples will be exposed to brown-rot decay fungi into different periods.   Development of preservative treated southern pine cross-laminated timber, Descrição: This project aims to develop the preservative-treatment procedures for industrial cross laminatedtimber (CLT) mats composed of southern yellow pine (SYP) lumber. The feasibility of pre- andpost-treating CLT panels with an environment-friendly preservative system for ground-contactapplications at an industrial scale will be evaluated from adhesion, mechanical, and durabilityperformance aspects. As for the pre-treatment method, CLT panels will be consolidated with preservative treated lumber adopting industrial CLT manufacturing parameters, including glue-type and clamping pressure. Alternatively, conventional CLT panels will be pressure treated with the same preservative system and dried afterward. As one of the primary focuses of the research, drying schedules which would not damage wood or adhesive layers will be determined. Also, penetration and retention of the preservatives throughout the post-treated panels will be analyzed. Adhesion and mechanical performance of the treated panels will be evaluated according to industry-accepted standards.
