CFD Assessment of Aerodynamic Enablers for Pickup Trucks, Descrição: In the presence of the worldwide interest on reducing road vehicle emissions, and following current efforts performed in the search of the range targets for the next generation electric vehicles, vehicle aerodynamics has been increasingly used by automakers as an efficient way of achieving less pollutant and better performance vehicles, mainly in the segment of medium and full size vehicles like pickup trucks. After a previous evaluation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques currently employed on the simulation of this vehicle-kind configuration, the CFD steady state formulation method was found to be reliable in previewing drag tendencies according to geometric variations of a baseline model. Thus, the aim of this project was to evaluate, through the use of steady state CFD, a series of aerodynamic enablers for pickup trucks. Among eight different model variations, three configurations were found to be favorable in reducing vehicle drag, and the use of steady-state CFD has shown itself a very cheap manner of reducing drag of a generic pickup body. If one is interested only in identifying positive or negative variations to the drag coefficient of a baseline pickup truck model, steady-state CFD would suffice, and through a very economic process.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Desenvolvimento. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) . , Integrantes: Maurício Ramacciato Massarotti - Coordenador / Ivan De Domenico Valarelli - Integrante / Vicente Luiz Scalon - Integrante.

A Study of the Aerodynamic Drag of Pickup Trucks, Descrição: In the presence of the worldwide interest on reducing road vehicle emissions, and following the current efforts performed in the search of the range targets for the next generation electric vehicles, vehicle aerodynamics has been used more and more by the automakers as an efficient way of achieving less pollutant and better performance vehicles, mainly in the segment of medium and full size pickup vehicles like pickup trucks. However, the flow structure over this geometric kind configuration is not yet fully understood as it is for other segments such as sedans, hatches e SUV s. The present work shows a literature survey about pickup trucks aerodynamics, that allows for a better understanding of the turbulence structure generated by the flow separations occurred in the open box region. Furthermore, an evaluation of the CFD techniques currently employed on the simulation of this kind of flow is performed through the comparison of the steady and transient-state formulation methods. Besides, it is performed an evaluation of these methods capacities of previewing negative or positive variations to the drag coefficient of pickup truck models simulated via CFD. It was noticed that both formulation methods are able of properly previewing drag coefficient tendencies, both qualitatively and quantitatively, according to geometric changes applied to a pickup model. In the forthcoming time, the present work will be used as a basis for evaluating possible alternatives to reduce pickup trucks aerodynamic drag, such as geometrical modification and specific accessories addition.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Desenvolvimento. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (1) . , Integrantes: Maurício Ramacciato Massarotti - Coordenador / Ivan De Domenico Valarelli - Integrante.
