  Sugarcane and ethanol water footprint under rainfed and irrigation, Descrição: The aim of this project is to quantify the green, blue and grey water footprint (WF) of ethanol and sugarcane. The assessment will be performed in a case study in Jaú/SP with sugarcane crops under subsurface drip fertigation and rainfed managed conditions. For WF estimation the agrohydrological model SWAP/WOFOST will be used as a main tool. Furthermore, crop parameters such crop height and the leaf area index along sugarcane cycle will be assessed by drone images aiming to improve the crop evapotranspiration estimation. For ethanol WF estimation, the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery will be used to simulate the industrial water balance together with all the stages of the sugarcane production chain.   Sustentabilidade da irrigação no setor sucroenergético, Descrição: A agricultura irrigada é um dos setores usuários de água com maior dinâmica e possibilidade de conflito sobre a disponibilidade hídrica de uma região. O cultivo da cana-de-açúcar vem expandindo para regiões onde a irrigação deverá ser complementada para reduzir o efeito de sucessivos veranicos. Dessa forma permite às unidades produtoras a redução da dependência do clima. Embora a cana-de-açúcar apresente tolerância ao déficit hídrico, o grande desafio é saber qual o nível de estresse admissível que ainda garanta altas produtividades e longevidade do canavial. Esta análise é de fundamental importância, pois a agricultura irrigada exige investimentos em obras, aquisição de equipamentos, transporte, controle e distribuição de água, gastos com energia e mão de obra.   Assessing Water Resources in Data Limited Regions and Changing Land Use, Descrição: In a number of watersheds there is increasing competition for water due to population growth and economic development. The pressures are amplified by changes in land use and, due to climate change, increasing frequency of climate extremes (floods and droughts). Changes from existing vegetation to agricultural crops, particularly intensive agriculture, can alter partitioning of water at the land surface through evapotranspiration, runoff, and recharge, affecting water quantity and quality. These changes could be amplified by climate extremes. Yet, there is no systematic approach to understanding these pressures at a watershed level. Moreover, there is limited understanding on how to assess water pressures from agriculture, which globally withdraws an estimated 70% and consumes an estimated 90% of fresh water resources. Data availability to assess the status and dynamics of water resources are extremely limited in many regions, particularly developing countries.
