    Dynamic rupture models of intraplate earthquakes in Brazil, Descrição: This project will produce the first-ever dynamic rupture models of intraplate earthquakes using a three-dimensional, multi-physics modeling approach. It initiates critical research on earthquake dynamics and wave propagation in Brazil, and on the physics of intraplate earthquakes in general. By modeling seismic waves, we will model the ground motions produced by recorded earthquakes.     Insights into megathrust fluid pressure, strength and slip distribution from multi-physics models of the 2004 M 9.2 Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and Indian Ocean tsunami, Descrição: Failure along 1300 km of the Sumatra-Andaman subduction zone on 26 December 2004 caused 8-10 minutes of violent shaking. The resulting M 9.2 megathrust earthquake generated a tsunami wave that was up to 30 m high along the northern coast of Sumatra. Preliminary models of the earthquake suggest that the megathrust operates under the conditions of low effective principal and differential stresses that result from high fluid pressures. However, tsunami models using the dynamic seafloor displacements from these models as sources reveal that only large model earthquakes produce reasonable tsunamis, while more reasonable model earthquakes produce only small tsunamis. This suggests that the reasonable earthquake models have correct slip magnitude on average, but the incorrect distribution of slip across the megathrust.     How dynamic damage development influences slip on segmented faults, Descrição: Following an earthquake, complex fault arrays and distributed damage may be mapped at the surface and observed at depth in the form of aftershocks. Secondary fault structures are particularly complex in regions between major faults. So how do these structures develop over multiple slip events and how important are they in allowing slip to continue across a step between major faults in a single slip event? We present boundary element method models of failure of 2D, slip-weakening faults separated by releasing or restraining steps.     ASCETE: Physics-Based, Coupled Subduction-Earthquake-Tsunami Modeling: Methods, Test Cases and Applications, Descrição: Large earthquakes along subduction zone interfaces have generated destructive tsunamis near Chile in 1960, Sumatra in 2004, and northeast Japan in 2011. In order to better understand these extreme events, we are designing methods for coupled, physics-based subduction zone earthquake and tsunami simulations. These will be presented as a series of test cases, that we hope will develop into community benchmarks for coupled modeling. We have applied parts of these methods in 2D to study the initial conditions of megathrust earthquakes as revealed by models of long term deformation, and in 3D to study the 2018 Palu, Sulawesi earthquake-tsunami sequence. We are currently coupling the 2D seismic cycling model to a 3D earthquake model.     Studying fault growth by analog and numerical modeling, Descrição: We innovate scaled sandbox and claybox analog models to study crustal accretion, estimate the amount of work required for fault creation, and study the long-term evolution of bent strike-slip faults. Using insights from these models and linear last fracture mechanics theory, we have built the fracture and fault propagation software, GROW, in which faults propagate according to work minimization. We also are adapting the analog model of the Parecis Basin (Oliveira, 2016) to a quasi-static numerical modeling framework order to determine the most influential parameters in the formation of this basin.     Mechanics of non-planar, segmented faults, Descrição: Earthquakes that rupture multiple faults are larger than those predicted from individual fault lengths, making understanding such events critical to seismic hazard mitigation.
This research analyzes how non-planar fault shape affects fault behavior using foward modeling and how inversions for the remote stress field vary with assumed fault geometry. First, we determine the 3D geometry of and interactions between strike-slip faults at an extensional step along the 1992 M 7.3 Landers, California earthquake surface rupture integrating mapped surface slip and aftershock data. Forward models reveal that fault geometry affects fault interactions and highlights the importance of small connector faults in transferring slip across steps. We find that the tectonic driving stress greatly influences fault behavior, but is poorly constrained near Landers and in many regions around the world.
