A spectroscopic survey of planetary nebula and symbiotic star candidates, Descrição: Planetary nebulae (PNe) and symbiotic stars (SySt) are emission-line objects at the final stages in the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars. Both are key objects for stellar evolution, with SySt being interacting binaries composed by a white dwarf and a cool red giant companion. About 3,500 PNe and 300 SySt are known in our Galaxy. Several attempts had tried to identify candidates in colour-colour diagnostic diagrams for follow-up spectroscopy. But the discovery rate is very low due to strong contamination of candidate lists with YSO, T Tauri Stars, cataclysmic variables, among others. We propose SOAR/Goodman optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 9 sources, selected from our list of PN/SySt candidates obtained using an innovative selection â?? based on machine/deep learning algorithms (Akras et al. 2019b,c) on the 2MASS and ALLWISE data of the Ha line-emitters identified in VPHAS+. This second (SO2019B-004) proposal following these new selection criteria goals are: (i) the confirmation of new PNe/SySts and (ii) the validation the new diagnostic IR criteria, for PNe.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: María Belén Mari - Integrante / Denise R. Spectroscopic confirmation of planetary nebula candidates identified in VPHAS+ (DR3) and ALLWISE, Descrição: Planetary nebulae (PNe) are emission-line objects at the final stages in the evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars. They are key objects for the stellar and chemical evolution in galaxies. About 3,500 PNe are known in the Milky Way. However, the expected number of PNe is ~5x10^4 (Moe & De Marco 2006). This implies that a huge amount of new PNe can potentially be found in multi-band catalogs of emission-line objects. Several attempts had tried to identify candidates in color-color diagnostic diagrams for follow-up spectroscopy. But the discovery rate is very low due to the strong contamination of the candidate lists with H II regions, YSO, cataclysmic variables, among others. We propose SOAR/Goodman optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 10 PN candidates obtained using an innovative selection method based on machine learning algorithms (Akras et al. 2019) and a combination of photometric measurements from surveys in different spectral wavelengths, namely, the ALLWISE data of the Halpha line-emitters identified in VPHAS+ (DR3). This proposal will allow us the confirmation of new PNe that, added to those of previous and forthcoming observing runs, will significantly impact the statistics of missing PNe in the Galaxy.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: María Belén Mari - Integrante / Denise R. Deciphering the nature of low-ionization structures in planetary nebulae, Descrição: Planetary nebulae (PNe) are key objects for the chemical evolution of galaxies and for establishing the first steps in the cosmic distance ladder. Our knowledge of these tools is based on their large-scale, high- ionized structures, though it is well known that PNe also host low-ionization, small-scale structures (LIS). A significant -- though still not well established -- fraction of the LIS's content is made of molecular matter, which unexpectedly are found embedded in the hash environment of the highly ionized gas of PNe shells. The optical characterization of LIS is undergoing for ~30 yrs, though the excitation mechanisms of LIS's emission is still under debate. More recently LIS started to be studied in the near-IR, with the particular goal of providing new insights into the shock- versus photo-excitation of their prominent emission lines. We therefore propose to use NIFS@Gemini-N to obtain the first deep near-IR IFU data from LIS, in two PNe with previous detection of H2 and [Fe II] 1.644 μm, and carry out the first spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis of these micro-structures in the near-IR regime. [Fe II] 1.644 μm/ Brgamma ratio, a most common tracer of shocks, will be mapped to finally understand the nature of LIS emissions.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: María Belén Mari - Integrante / Denise R. Gemini Ultra Deep Imaging Survey for H2 in planetary nebulae (GULDISH2), Descrição: Recent deep H2 narrow-band imagery of planetary nebulae using large telescopes have unveiled the presence of molecular hydrogen in small-scale structures with strong low-ionization lines (LISs). Such deep observations showed new H2 reservoirs and helped revealed the presence molecular gas in LISs. We propose to carry out the deepest H2 imaging survey of PNe, by observing the strong near-IR ro- vibrational line at 2.122 mu using both Gemini telescopes. A sample of 8 PNe with LISs will be observed. This ultra deep imagery of PNe will allow us to seek for the weak H2 emission that emanates from LISs, will provide valuable information about the distribution of molecular gas in PNe, in addition of the link with these intriguing substructures. Moreover, a target list of PNe for follow-up spectroscopic observations will be provided either for large ground-based telescopes and/or JWST, which is crucial for understanding the excitation and formation mechanisms of H2 gas.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: María Belén Mari - Integrante / Denise R. Molecular hydrogen imaging of Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae (PNe): Towards upper limits on PN progenitors and lower limits on supernova progenitors, Descrição: We propose to use GeMS/GSAOI at Gemini South to image the 2.12 um H2 (1-0) S(1) and Br-gamma emission in a sample of 7 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) planetary nebulae (PNe) for which HST optical emission-line images at spatial resolution very similar to that of GeMS/GSAOI have revealed highly extended and profoundly bipolar or point-symmetric structures. The proposed H2 imaging observations of these initial targets will provide the first insight into the amount and distribution of molecular gas in the ejecta of LMC PNe. The results will hence represent a fundamental step in the evaluation of total ejected mass from AGB stars near the upper end of their mass domain, and will thereby help to constrain the lower limit for the masses of supernova progenitors in low-metallicity environments.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: María Belén Mari - Integrante / Denise R.
