Spatial and Immunoepidemiologic Methods for Evaluating the Risk of Residual Lymphatic Filariasis Transmission from Two Integrated Serosurveillance Studies in the Dominican Republic, Descrição: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitos and caused by parasitic worms. Infection can cause severe life-long disability and disfigurement, such as severe swelling of the legs (elephantiasis) or genitals in men. By distributing treatment to whole populations, countries can reduce the number of infected individuals to such a low level that transmission is interrupted. In the Dominican Republic (DR) the number of infected individuals is very low, but work is still needed to ensure that transmission is interrupted in all regions and avoid resurgence. This study aims to improve methods to identify areas where there might exist transmission by exploring novel approaches, namely new diagnostic tests, strategies to select population to be tested and statistical models to predict transmission rates. To do so, blood samples collected in two different national surveys conducted in the DR will be tested against LF, using traditional and new diagnostic tests. As the surveys had different strategies to select participants, results will be compared regarding the ability to find positive cases. Finally, infection rates and environmental and sociodemographic data will be incorporated into statistical models to produce risk maps. These maps can be used by local authorities to prioritise surveillance activities and support more targeted public health interventions. Additionally, the project will establish a collaboration between UQ and The Carter Center, currently both working independently in DR.
