Michel dos Santos Mesquita
Michel d. S. Mesquita is a Senior Research Scientist/Professor at NORCE Norwegian Research Centre and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research in Bergen, Norway. He is also Head of R&D at Future Solutions, also in Norway. He has a PhD degree in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (USA) with GPA 4.0, where he worked as a Research Assistant at the International Arctic Research Center. He also has a Masters degree in Geophysics (Climatology) from the University of Bergen, Norway. Michel has attended the MIT Short Programs, where he studied advanced Data Analysis, as well as Leadership Skills for Science Faculty. His research interests are: synoptic-dynamic climatology, storm tracks, sea-ice-atmosphere interactions, regional climate modeling, artificial intelligence and Bayesian methods. He has won awards for Academic Excellence in the USA and Japan.

C-ICE: Counteracting effect of future Antarctic sea-ice loss on projected increases of summer Monsoon rainfall, Descrição: The C-ICE Project, entitled 'Counteracting effect of future Antarctic sea-ice loss on projected increases of summer Monsoon rainfall' is funded by the Norwegian Research Council through the POLARPROG initiative. C-ICE brings cutting edge research to unravel details on the interaction between sea-ice and the atmosphere. More specifically, we address three main scientific questions: 1) How do changes in Antarctic sea-ice cover affect the mid-latitude storm activity in the Southern Hemisphere in terms of heat and momentum transport? 2) How do the Hadley circulation and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) adjust in response to changes in southern mid-latitude heat and momentum transport during boreal summer? 3) Would a southward shift of the ITCZ in boreal summer manifest itself in a changed distribution of Indian Summer Monsoon rainfall? The project is run by Uni Research Climate, one of the four members of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, in Bergen, Norway, and The Energy and Resources Institute, in New Delhi, India. Climate Change and its Impacts on Selected Indian Hydrological Systems using Earth System and High-Resolution Modeling (NORINDIA), Descrição: The NORINDIA Project assesses at the monsoon variability and the hydrological cycle in the Hindu-Kush-Himalayas region for the baseline and future time scales, so that climate information can be made available for policy makers and stakeholders for informed decision making - this is the main objective of the NORINDIA project. The NORINDIA Project draws its research activities on an existing partnership between Norway and India with five Norwegian and three Indian collaborators. The project started in October 2012 and ended in October 2015 and it was funded by the Norwegian Research Council through a competitive proposal call related to understanding the hydrological impacts of climate change in India. The project is coordinated by Dr. Michel Mesquita (Uni Research Climate, the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research), and the Norwegian collaborators are: the University of Bergen and Oslo, the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) and Statkraft. The Indian partners are: the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), the Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation (C-MMACS) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The project also brings contribution from the Research Applications Laboratory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the United States, thus drawing on their expertise in hydrological modelling.
