Agnelo Rocha da Silva
Agnelo Silva earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering-Electrophysics in 2015 from the University of Southern California, M.Sc. in Computer Engineering in 2010 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and B.Sc. in Computer Science in 2008 from the Universidade Federal do Ceará, Brazil. His research is related to both sensing and wireless communication in lossy material (particularly, soil medium) by means of broadband dielectric impedance spectroscopy from sub-MHz to optical frequencies. His main achievements are associated with sub-MHz Magnetic Induction-based Wireless Underground Sensor Networks (MI-WUSNs), energy-efficient Wakeup on Radio (WuR) technology, and an innovative way ('endoscopic' approach) to characterize materials using Near-infrared (NIR) absorption reflectance spectroscopy. He designed the first indoor sub-MHz MI-WUSN testbed reported at the scientific literature, and he is currently extending this testbed to be one the largest MI Impedance Spectroscopy (MIS) instrumentation tested so far developed involving more than 3 cubic meters of soil. His intention is to close the loop between MIS and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and achieve a solution that can fully characterize the electrical properties of soils at the sub-MHz range. Moreover, for the last part of his doctorate work, he developed a very important methodology to identify and separate the electrode polarization (EP) effects from the 2-electrode dielectric measurements at the sub-MHz range, an open 125-year-old research problem. These findings have potential to be applied to the following applications: precise irrigation, communication under-the-debris for disaster scenarios, oil/gas pipeline leak detection systems, infrastructure monitoring (buildings, bridges, tunnels), and novel remote medicine instrumentation for low-cost diagnostics. Currently, he is aiming the collaboration with ICMP-USP Sao Carlos and Centro Nacional de Monitoramento e Alertas de Desastres Naturais (CEMADEN, São José dos Campos, SP - Brazil) in order to test the feasibility of the NIR- and MI-based technologies adapted to systems that monitor natural disasters (e.g., soil landslide).

Interplanetary ice/dust and Earth soil broadband dielectric spectroscopy, Descrição: Development of the instrumentation and procedures to measure the dielectric properties of interplanetary ice/dust and also Earth soil samples from 1Hz to 3GHz.It is well known that for subMHz frequencies, the main challenge is the "electrode polarization effect". Moving to microwave frequencies, the main artifacts can be caused by the imperfection involving the sample and the dielectric cell (or similar decie used to hold the sample). The main goal of this project is to understand how different instrumentation schemes can be combined in order to provide the best dielectric measurements results considering the frequency and material under analysis.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (2) / Doutorado: (2) . , Integrantes: Agnelo Rocha da Silva - Integrante / Mahta Moghaddam - Coordenador.

SoilSCAPE - Wireless Soil Moisture Smart Sensor Web Using Physics-Based Optimal Control, Descrição: Soil moisture is a measurement need in four out of the six NASA strategic focus area roadmaps (climate, carbon, weather, and water roadmaps). It is used in all land surface models, all water and energy balance models, general circulation models, weather prediction models, and ecosystem process simulation models. Depending on the particular application area, this quantity may need to be measured with a number of different sampling characteristics. Traditional remote sensing techniques using radars and radiometers fail to meet such requirements due to their large footprints. This project introduces a new concept for a smart wireless sensor web technology for optimal measurements of surface-to-depth profiles of soil moisture using in-situ sensors. The objective is to enable a guided and adaptive sampling strategy for the in-situ sensor network to meet the measurement validation objectives of spaceborne soil moisture sensors. A potential application for this technology is the validation of products from Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) mission. Spatially, the total variability in soil-moisture fields comes from variability in processes on various scales. Temporally, variability is caused by external forcings, landscape heterogeneity, and antecedent conditions. Installing a dense in-situ network to sample the field continuously in time for all ranges of variability is impractical. However, a sparser but smarter network with an optimized placement plan and optimal measurement schedule can provide the validation estimates by operating in a guided fashion with guidance from its own sparse measurements. The feedback and control take place in the context of a dynamic physics-based hydrologic and sensor modeling system. The design of this smart sensor web consists of the control architecture, sensor placement and scheduling algorithms, physics-based hydrologic and sensor models, and actuation and communication hardware.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Graduação: (0) / Especialização: (0) / Mestrado acadêmico: (0) / Mestrado profissional: (0) / Doutorado: (6) . , Integrantes: Agnelo Rocha da Silva - Integrante / Mahta Moghaddam - Coordenador / Mingyan Liu - Integrante / Demos Teneketzis - Integrante / Dara Entekhabi - Integrante., Financiador(es): National Aeronautics and Space Administration - SMAP Mission - Bolsa.
