  SmartAqua4FuturE - SAFE, Descrição: The objective of SAFE project is to reduce the environmental impact and improve the viability of the FW aquaculture by applying circular economy approaches to the valorisation of solid and liquid wastes from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and integThe main objective of SAFE project is to reduce the environmental impact and improve the viability of the FW aquaculture by applying circular economy (CE) approaches to the valorisation of solid and liquid wastes from recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems. The economic viability of FW aquaculture will be improved through major advances in management systems and the integration of waste streams from FW aquaculture systems (FWAS) into the aquaculture feed chain. SAFE will enable the uptake of these solutions through local and regional scale demonstrations across the EU and will document the necessary management and governance conditions for successful transferability. The multidisciplinary expertise of the consortium across a wide range of systems, species and geographies will target the enhancement of species of particular biodiversity concerns, such as European native crayfish. We will improve the sustainability of FW aquaculture production and investigate the feasibility of diversification through the culture of under-represented species (perch) and valuable crayfish species with declining populations. Lastly, we will compare the experiences of EU FW aquaculture to Chinese FWAS and value chains, the largest, fastest-growing and most diverse aquaculture sector in the world, using mutual knowledge sharing to improve the sustainability of aquaculture in China and the EU.   OCEAN3R - Reduce pressures, restore and regenerate the NW-Portuguese ocean and waters, Descrição: OCEAN3R aims to contribute to the Mission area ?Healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters?, at a regional and global level, through the development of solutions to reduce anthropogenic pressures on marine and freshwater ecosystems, and to restore and regenerate degraded habitats along the NW-Portuguese coast. To achieve this, OCEAN3R will embrace the three thematic objectives of the Mission area (zero pollution; regenerating marine and freshwater ecosystems; decarbonising our ocean and waters) that will be supported by two transversal objectives (filling the knowledge and emotional gap, revamping governance). Zero pollution will be explored through RL1, that will tackle the three major sources of pollution in the NW Portuguese coast: (i) eutrophication (as a result of excessive enrichment of water by nutrients); (ii) discharge, loss and leakage of contaminants (either persistent pollutants or emerging ones) originated not only from land-based sources, but also from sea-based activities; and (iii) marine litter (found on beaches and coastlines, on the sea surface as well as on the seabed). RL2 will combine three actions focused on improving knowledge and developing new approaches for regeneration of degraded habitats in NW-Portuguese coast line: (i) Novel approaches to aquatic species? assessment - Genetics & Genomics; (ii) Assessing conditions and dynamics of aquatic habitats; (iii) Solutions for habitat restoration and regeneration. RL3 will focus in four main actions for the development and application of strategies to decarbonise the NW-Portuguese ocean and waters: (i) foster a carbon neutral fish production; (ii) promote the increase of diets based on fish to reduce carbon footprint; (iii) clean up the ocean by using algae for carbon fixation; and (iv) develop new technologies for production of green energy. Underpinning the scientific activities developed within the three research lines (RL1, RL2 and RL3), OCEAN3R will implement different initiatives and programs targeting data sharing, citizens engagement and governance, including activities related with marine habitats monitoring, restauration and protection activities, promoting ocean literacy as well as blue education and citizen engagement. These activities will be organized with the aim of producing effective outcomes in (i) foster scientific data access and transparency; (ii) connect and motivate citizens to actively contribute to actions related with marine habitats protection, restauration and new knowledge; (iii) educate and training youth for upskilling a new generation of a blue knowledge; (iv) to strength regional and national governance framework for a sustainable NW-Portuguese ocean management. These transversal activities are particularly relevant to achieve one of the main societal outcomes outlined in the Strategic Approach for the Decade, of the Roadmap for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development: A transparent and accessible ocean whereby all nations, stakeholders and citizens have access to ocean data and information, technologies and have the capacities to inform their decisions.   AQUAHEAL: Modulação microbiana em aquaculturas com sistema de recirculação: em direção de um sistema de produção supressor de doenças., Descrição: A presente candidatura, denominada por AquaHeal - Modulação microbiana em aquaculturas com sistema de recirculação: em direção de um sistema de produção supressor de doenças, enquadra-se no Regime de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Sustentável da Aquacultura, nos Domínios da Inovação, do Aconselhamento e dos Investimentos Produtivos ao abrigo da Prioridade da União Europeia estabelecida no n.º 2 do artigo 6.º do Regulamento (UE) n.º 508/2014. Existe hoje uma crescente consciencialização de que o microbioma das aquaculturas deverá ser uma prioridade no desenvolvimento tecnológico e na expansão sustentável do setor. Os problemas com surtos de doenças em peixes são largamente agravados pela falta de medidas adequadas de controlo de doenças para sistemas de aquacultura intensivas. Estes sistemas produzem, grandes densidades de peixes em condições ambientais controladas e são altamente dependentes da comunidade microbiana para purificação e controlo da qualidade da água (ex. níveis de nutrientes) e saúde dos peixes (ex. presença de agentes patogénicos). Neste projeto, pretende-se aplicar o conceito de modulação do microbioma, com base em métodos químicos (ex. prébióticos) e/ou celulares (ex. probióticos), no desenvolvimento de produtos e serviços inovadores que permitam a modulação da microbiota da água e supressão de doenças em aquaculturas intensivas com sistema de recirculação (RAS). Uma abordagem multidisciplinar, baseada nos recentes avanços da microbiologia molecular e aquacultura experimental, será aplicada no estudo dos efeitos isolados e interativos de diferentes modeladores microbianos. A informação obtida irá servir para avaliar os efeitos dos modeladores (na microbiologia do sistema (ex. supressão de agentes patogénicos), saúde e crescimento dos peixes.   MODELFISH ? Modelo Predictivo de Ingestão Alimentar como Ferramenta de Controlo Ambiental em Produção Aquática., Descrição: A aquacultura de peixes e outros organismos aquáticos tem vindo a expandir a nível mundial, tendo a produção de peixe fresco aumentado de 7 milhões de toneladas em 1980 para 17 milhões de toneladas em 1990 e aproximadamente 60 milhões de toneladas em 2006. Contudo, á medida que esta atividade se tem vindo a expandir, o seu sucesso comercial é ensombrado pelo crescente impacto que tem vindo a causar nos recursos marinhos e costeiros através de descarga de poluentes. Num sistema de aquacultura a fonte principal de poluição é o alimento fornecido; fósforo e azoto são consequentemente os elementos mais preocupantes nos efluentes das instalações. Visto que a produção de biomassa de peixe depende efetivamente do consumo de alimento dos peixes, um modelo capaz de simular esse consumo baseado na espécie de peixe e nas condições bióticas e abióticas locais (por exemplo a qualidade da água, composição do alimento e estratégia de alimentação) pode ser extremamente útil. Diversos modelos explanatórios de simulação do crescimento de peixes, baseados em conceitos básicos sobre o crescimento, foram desenvolvidos em décadas recentes, para uma variedade de peixes de água doce. Contudo, até à data de hoje, não foi desenvolvido qualquer modelo de simulação baseado em mecanismos regulatórios que controlam a ingestão de alimento para peixes marinhos. A ingestão de alimento é uma variável essencial para qualquer modelo explanatório do processo de crescimento de peixes. Compreender como os peixes controlam o consumo de alimento pode auxiliar os aquicultores no desenvolvimento de alimentos e de estratégias de alimentação que otimizem a produção de peixe minimizando o desperdício de alimento e a emissão de poluentes. Contudo, pouca atenção tem sido prestada à avaliação da ingestão máxima de alimento de peixes marinhos criados em diversas condições de cativeiro.   SEABIOPLAS - Seaweeds from sustainable aquaculture as feedstock for biodegradable bioplastics, Descrição: O SEABIOPLAS visa o desenvolvimento de uma alternativa mais verde para a produção de bioplásticos utilizando macroalgas como matéria-prima por oposição ao uso de alimentos essenciais para o ser humano, como por exemplo, o milho, o trigo, a beterraba e a cana-de- açúcar, entre outros recursos naturais. A produção de macroalgas assentará no regime de aquacultura denominado Aquacultura Multi-Trófica Integrada (sigla em ingles - IMTA). Este conceito foi recentemente apontado pela CE como uma ferramenta para aumentar a produção aquícola animal de uma forma sustentável. No SEABIOPLAS, as empresas responsáveis por fornecer macroalgas produzidas neste sistema são a ALGAplus em Portugal (produção de algas verdes e vermelhas integrada com dourada e robalo) e a CPS/DOMMRS na Irlanda (produção de algas castanhas integrada com salmão). Comparando esta forma de produção com a utilizada para as matérias-primas agora usadas (agricultura intensiva), algumas das vantagens são uma redução efectiva das emissões de CO2, produtividades mais elevadas, redução do consumo de água doce e a não utilização de fertilizantes ou pesticidas. Durante o SEABIOPLAS, serão produzidos bio-polímeros para serem testados na elaboração de filmes, tintas e materiais adesivos.   ALGADOURADA ? Seleção e avaliação de macroalgas como aditivos em rações de peixes da aquicultura, Descrição: A hipótese de trabalho do ALGADOURADA é que suplementar ração de peixes (neste caso dourada) com um produto à base de macroalgas irá aumentar a defesa e respostas antioxidantes, regular a ecologia intestinal e melhorar a retenção de nutrientes, promovendo assim o aumento da resistência a doenças infecciosos com melhores resultados económicos na produção aquícola. Assim, estes pressupostos visam determinar quais as funções fisiológicas / metabólicas que são reforçadas pelas macroalgas e que são determinantes para o aumento da produção dos peixes bem como redução de mortalidades em condições adversas de criação. Neste âmbito, o projecto ALGADOURADA irá realizar as seguintes tarefas: produção de macroalgas nas instalações do promotor (atividade 1); triagem, seleção, e bio-prospecção de extratos e biomoléculas activas (atividade 2); microencapsulação dos compostos das macroalgas, formulação e produção das rações experimentais (atividade 3) e avaliar o crescimento e os efeitos protectores das rações com macroalgas, em douradas acondicionadas em diferentes condições de stress, incluindo um teste próximo das condições reais (atividade 4). A tarefa 2 incidirá sobre a validação in vitro das propriedades prebióticas de extratos de macroalgas e seu valor de bioprospecção. Na tarefa 4, vão testar-se os efeitos desses extratos nos parâmetros biométricos e os biomarcadores selecionados, associados ao sistema de defesa imunológico, desintoxicação, processos antioxidantes e produção de energia. No fim do projecto, pretende-se apresentar produtos bioactivos extraídos de macroalgas marinhas com actividade biológica, viabilidade técnica e passiveis de comercialização.   NECESSIDADES NUTRICIONAIS E ALIMENTAÇÃO DO GORAZ (Pagellus bogaraveo), UMA NOVA ESPÉCIE PARA A AQUACULTURA INTENSIVA, Descrição: Na última década, a piscicultura marinha tem crescido de forma assinalável. Actualmente, em Portugal esta indústria apoia-se em três espécies principais, a dourada (Sparus aurata), o robalo (Dicentrarchus labrax) e o rodovalho (Psetta maximus). No entanto, como garante do crescimento sustentado da aquacultura marinha Portuguesa torna-se importante aumentar a diversidade da oferta, por forma a evitar problemas de saturação de mercado, competição entre os produtores e um melhor aproveitamento das instalações de produção, nomeadamente, das maternidades. O goraz (Pagellus bogaraveo) é um teleósteo marinho de elevado valor económico e apresenta um grande potencial para se estabelecer como uma espécie de cultivo marinho intensivo nas águas do Atlântico. Actualmente, os estudos sobre o goraz em condições de cativeiro são extremamente raros e incipentes, incidindo essencialmente em aspectos como o controlo da reprodução e as condições de cultivo de larvas e juvenis. Na alimentação desta espécies em cativeiro utilizam-se actualmente alimentos desenvolvidos para outras espécies marinhas, dado que a informação sobre as necessidades nutricionais específicas do goraz são inexistentes. Num contexto geral, este projecto visa contribuir para um melhor conhecimento das necessidades nutricionais e estratégias alimentares das larvas e juvenis de goraz. No que se refere à nutrição larvar, os estudos visam: 1) optimizar as estratégias de alimentação com alimento vivo; 2) avaliar as estratégias de adaptação precoce ao alimento micro-particulado; 3) optimizar a composição do alimento micro-particulado (i.e. teor e fonte de lípidos, proteínas e energia, teor adequado de PUFA e da razão de DHA/EPA).   Levedura desidratada alcooleira como fonte proteica na dieta de peixes tropicais: efeitos no desempenho nutricional, fisiologia e na digestibilidade de ingredientes de racao, Descrição: Ensaios de alimentação serão conduzidos para determinar os efeitos dos vários níveis da suplementação dietética de levedura desidratada (sacaromyces cerevisae) em substituição a farinha de peixe, no desempenho nutricional, na digestibilidade aparente de nutrientes da ração, utilizando a tilapia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) e o Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). Em cada ensaio, 1260 alevinos de tilapia (30 g cada) serão distribuídos em blocos ao acaso e estocados em 21 tanques de polipropileno, de 1.000L (60 peixes / tanque), com sistema de recirculação.
