  Predicting immediate and extended fire effects on a mixed conifer forest at high resolution from lidar and multispectral imagery, Descrição: Descrição: Mapping wildfire effects on trees is important to plan future fire prescriptions and to manage forest fuels and biomass. The aim of this study is to map post-fire black (charred), brown (scorched), and green (live) tree canopy cover, basal area, and biomass of trees in a mixed conifer forest from airborne lidar and immediate or extended collections of high-resolution multispectral satellite (Quickbird) imagery. The study focuses on two forested communities in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) of central Idaho that had been protected with WUI and Firewise fuel treatments and therefore survived the Cascade and East Zone megafires of 2007.   NASA CMS: Future Mission Fusion for High Biomass Forest Carbon Accounting, Descrição: This is a NASA?s Carbon Monitoring System project led by Laura Duncason and Lola Fatoyinbo. The primary objectives of our project are: i) To independently quantify the relationship between biomass density and expected error from planned (i.e. with current mission algorithms) GEDI, NISAR and ICESat-2 in high AGB forests in Sonoma County, Costa Rica, and Gabon; ii) To identify the sources of error in high AGB forests for each mission, includingfrom field estimates (GPS error, allometry), from errors in the airborne/spaceborne data (penetration to the ground), and from errors in empirical modeling; iii) To assess data fusion techniques in order to increase the accuracy of AGB estimation.   Mapeamento de carga de combustível e simulação do comportamento e propagação do fogo no bioma Cerrado com uso de tecnologias de modelagem e sensoriamento remoto, Descrição: A Agência Espacial Norte Americana (NASA) e Universidade de Maryland (UMD) estão desenvolvendo o primeiro LiDAR (do inglês, light detection and ranging) orbital destinado exclusivamente ao monitoramento global dos ecossistemas florestais. O The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), assim denominado, será enviado a estação espacial internacional no final de 2018, e fornecerá estimativas da estrutura florestal, tais como altura de copas e biomassa aérea. Este projeto de pesquisa tem como objetivo i) avaliar a aplicação da tecnologia GEDI como ferramenta eficiente no mapeamento das cargas de combustível superficial e de copa, e ii) testar tecnologias de simulação do comportamento e propagação do fogo como subsídio para o Manejo Integrado do Fogo (MIF) no bioma Cerrado. A área de estudo abrange toda extensão do bioma Cerrado, porém as análises do comportamento e disseminação do fogo serão realizadas somente nas áreas de atuação do programa Prevfogo-Ibama presentes no Cerrado. O projeto será dividido em três etapas: Etapa 1) Nesta etapa, modelos matemáticos serão calibrados e validados com dados GEDI simulados através de dados LiDAR coletados por veículos aéreos não tripulados. Os modelos preditivos da carga de combustível gerados e métricas da estrutura florestal fornecidas pelo GEDI pós-lançamento serão utilizadas para gerar estimativas das cargas de combustível à nível de footprint (parcelas circulares com 25 m de raio) para o Cerrado; Etapa 2) Nesta etapa, estimativas das cargas de combustível superficial e aéreo derivadas do GEDI em nível de footprint, métricas derivados de imagem de satélite Sentinel-2A e o método de imputação ?k-vizinho mais próximo?   ForestGapR: An R Package for Airborne Laser Scanning-derived Tropical Forest Gaps Analysis, Descrição: In forest ecosystems, many functional processes are governed by local canopy gap dynamics, caused by either natural or anthropogenic factors. Quantifying the size and spatial distribution of canopy gaps enables an improved understanding of the time-integrated effects of tree failure and mortality, in addition to regrowth and succession rates, carbon flux patterns, species heterogeneity, and three-dimensional spacing within structurally complex forest ecosystems. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) has emerged as a technology that is well-suited for mapping forest canopy gaps in a wide variety of forest ecosystems and across spatial scales. New technological and algorithm advances, including ALS remote-sensing, coupled with optimized frameworks for data processing and detection of forest canopy gaps, are allowing an enhanced understanding of forest structure and functional processes. In this project we introduce GapForestR, a cutting-edge open source R package for forest gap analysis in tropical forests. The GapForestR package offers tools to i) automate canopy gaps detection, ii) compute a series of gap statistics, including gap-size frequency distributions, iii) map gap dynamics (when multi-temporal ALS data are available), and iv) convert the data among spatial formats. As case studies, we run GapForestR on ALS data collected over four different tropical forest regions worldwide.   LiDAR, passive spectral, and ecophysiological approaches to link Forest Tundra Ecotone structure and function- NASA-ABoVE, Descrição: Sub-project: Suitability of lidar to characterize the structure of individual trees and fine-scale variability in soil temperature along a Forest Tundra Ecotone site Abstract: One of the world?s largest ecotones with approximately 13,400 km is the Forest Tundra Ecotone (FTE). However, little is known about how the FTE. In this study, our goals are twofold. First, we will examine the ability of ALS to characterize the unique structural properties of individual trees that may exhibit controls on the physical growth environment in the FTE. Second, we will link the lidar-derived crown structural properties to observed variations of tree height, tree diameter, crown openness, and soil temperature. We will apply a recently developed individual tree crown detection (ITD) algorithm to a high-resolution ALS dataset at six plot locations on the forest tundra ecotone. Subsequently, we will extract lidar metrics for each of the individual detected trees to assess four important vegetation and growth environment metrics.   Application of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for forest inventory, Descrição: The aim of project was to evaluate the use of UAV technology for forest inventory: #Sub-project: Individual Tree Detection from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Derived Canopy Height Model in an Open Canopy Mixed Conifer Forest Advances in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology and data processing capabilities have made it feasible to obtain high-resolution imagery and three dimensional (3D) data which can be used for forest monitoring and assessing tree attributes. This study evaluates the applicability of low consumer grade cameras attached to UAVs and structure-from-motion (SfM) algorithm for automatic individual tree detection (ITD) using a local-maxima based algorithm on UAV-derived Canopy Height Models (CHMs). This study was conducted in a private forest at Cache Creek located east of Jackson city, Wyoming. Based on the UAV-imagery, we allocated 30 field plots of 20 m 20 m. For each plot, the number of trees was counted manually using the UAV-derived orthomosaic for reference. A total of 367 reference trees were counted as part of this study and the algorithm detected 312 trees resulting in an accuracy higher than 85% (F-score of 0.86). Overall, the algorithm missed 55 trees (omission errors), and falsely detected 46 trees (commission errors) resulting in a total count of 358 trees. We further determined the impact of fixed tree window sizes (FWS) and fixed smoothing window sizes (SWS) on the ITD accuracy, and detected an inverse relationship between tree density and FWS. In this study, we use data collected during the AfriSAR campaign in Gabon from ground and airborne small footprint (SF) and large footprint (LF) lidar sensors to simulate LVIS observations, which is a proxy to GEDI, and evaluate the characterization of ground, aboveground height and biomass. The study focuses on the Lope National Park in Central Gabon and across a gradient of successional stages of forest development with different height, canopy density and topography. The comparison of the two sensors shows that LF lidar waveforms are equivalent to simulated waveforms from SF lidar for measuring the ground elevation (RMSE=0.5 m, bias=0.29 m) and the maximum forest height (RMSE=2.99 m; bias=0.24 m). Comparison of gridded LF lidar height with ground plots showed that an unbiased estimate of aboveground biomass at 1-ha can be achieved with sufficient number of LF footprints (> 3).   Carbon Storage in Tropical Forests (NASA - JPL), Descrição: #Sub-project: Impacts of Airborne Lidar Pulse Density on Estimating Biomass Stocks and Changes in a Selectively Logged Tropical Forest. Airborne lidar is a technology well-suited for mapping many forest attributes, including aboveground biomass (AGB) stocks and changes in selective logging in tropical forests. However, trade-offs still exist between lidar pulse density and accuracy of AGB estimates. We assessed the impacts of lidar pulse density on the estimation of AGB stocks and changes using airborne lidar and field plot data in a selectively logged tropical forest located near Paragominas, Pará, Brazil. Field-derived AGB was computed at 85 square 50 50 m plots in 2014. Lidar data were acquired in 2012 and 2014, and for each dataset the pulse density was subsampled from its original density of 13.8 and 37.5 pulsesm2 to lower densities of 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0.8, 0.6, 0.4 and 0.2 pulsesm2. For each pulse density dataset, a power-law model was developed to estimate AGB stocks from lidar-derived mean height and corresponding changes between the years 2012 and 2014. We found that AGB change estimates at the plot level were only slightly affected by pulse density. However, at the landscape level we observed differences in estimated AGB change of >20 Mgha1 when pulse density decreased from 12 to 0.2 pulsesm2. The effects of pulse density were more pronounced in areas of steep slope, especially when the digital terrain models (DTMs) used in the lidar derived forest height were created from reduced pulse density data. In particular, when the DTM from high pulse density in 2014 was used to derive the forest height from both years, the effects on forest height and the estimated AGB stock and changes did not exceed 20 Mgha1. The results suggest that AGB change can be monitored in selective logging in tropical forests with reasonable accuracy and low cost with low pulse density lidar surveys if a baseline high-quality DTM is available from at least one lidar survey.   RxCADRE - Data set for fuels, fire behavior, smoke, and fire effects model development and evaluation, Descrição: The RxCADRE project evolved to collect, reduce, and complete a preliminary analysis of integrated, quality-assured data on small replicate (5 ha) and large operational (500+ ha) prescribed fire burn-blocks in longleaf pine ecosystems. Data were collected for seven large operational prescribed fires in 2008 and 2011 at Eglin Air Force Base, FL, and the Joseph W. Jones Ecological Research Center, GA. The aim in this study was to predict individual-tree height (Ht; m), basal area (BA; m2), and stem volume (V; m3) attributes, imputing Random Forest k-nearest neighbor (RF k-NN) and individual-tree-level-based metrics extracted from a LiDAR-derived canopy height model (CHM) in a longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) forest in southwestern Georgia, United States. We developed a new framework for modeling tree-level forest attributes that comprise 3 steps: (i) individual tree detection, crown delineation, and tree-level-based metrics computation from LiDAR-derived CHM; (ii) automatic matching of LiDAR-derived trees and field-based trees for a regression modeling step using a novel algorithm; and (iii) RF k-NN imputation modeling for estimating tree-level Ht, BA, and V and subsequent summarization of these metrics at the plot and stand levels. RMSDs for tree-level Ht, BA, and V were 2.96%, 58.62%, and 8.19%, respectively. Although BA estimation accuracy was poor because of the longleaf pine growth habitat, individual-tree locations, Ht, and V were estimated with high accuracy, especially in low-canopy-cover conditions. Future efforts based on the findings could help improve the estimation accuracy of individual-tree-level attributes such as BA. # Sub-project B: Comparison of terrestrial and airborne lidar derived crown metrics for describing forest structure at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida Lidar has been increasingly used in forest inventory and management.   Estimating aboveground carbon in Eucalyptus spp. plantations from field and lidar dta, Descrição: In the context of global climate change, the quantification of the carbon content in forest plantations have received great attention. This is because vegetation play an important role in the global carbon budget. This master thesis was developed in two main parts. The first part was to adjust allometric equations for the estimation of the carbon content at a tree level. This was performed for the above ground section (Ctotal), in commercial logs (Cleco) and residuals ( Crds) (e.g. bark, leaves and branches/twigs). The experiment was based on the destructive model of individual trees harvested in commercial plantations of Eucaliptus spp. The experiment encompasses both forest inventory and laboratory analyses procedures. Additionally, in-situ measurements such as the diameter at the breast height (DBH) and the total tree height were also performed. These sample plots were located in homogeneous forest units and close to the areas were the trees have been harvested. The second part of this master thesis was the evaluation of the airborne LiDAR technology as a tool for the retrieval of the above ground biomass (Ctotal), the carbon present in the commercial logs (Cleco) and residuals. This procedure was performed at the sample plots level. This procedure was based on the information provided in the first part. The results are presented as two scientific manuscripts. The first manuscript shows that allometric equations based on the log of the variables diameter at the breast height (DBH) and total tree height (Ht) were good predictors for the retrieval of the total carbon content at a tree level. The second manuscript allow the selection of the best LiDAR derived metrics for the retrieval of the total carbon content, either at above ground level, commercial logs and residual parts of the tree at a sample plots level.
