  European perceptions of climate change: Scepticism, energy preferences and societal transformation, Descrição: Public engagement with climate change, and support for policies to tackle it, is critical in creating a climate-proof Europe. While attitudes to climate change have been well documented in individual European countries, their designs have never been coordinated. Also, each nation has its own unique sociopolitical context and energy infrastructure that need to be taken into account to make meaningful comparisons. There is an urgent need to connect the within-country knowledge that does exist, conduct rigorous cross-national research, and synthesise public perceptions at a European level. In a two year project involving an inter-disciplinary team from the UK, Germany, Norway and France we will address this need through: directly comparable and nationally representative surveys of public opinion together with in-depth analyses of the sociopolitical context in each participating nation; and an innovative international stakeholder panel for co-constructing the sociopolitical analyses and disseminating findings. Whilst there have been some surveys of European public opinion, no theoretically well-justified cross-national analysis of climate change and energy perceptions has ever been conducted. The project will ground the survey findings in sociopolitical factors relevant to public perceptions, allowing robust international comparisons, and producing a detailed and rich source of knowledge for policy-makers. Outputs will include cross-national data on climate change and energy preferences and a series of recommendations for enhancing public engagement with climate change. We will take an innovative approach to stakeholder engagement. An international panel will co-construct the sociopolitical analysis that informs the survey design, and will then play a central role in a co-ordinated programme of dissemination and outreach.   MEMOTRADE - Social memory of water-related trades and practices: local knowledge and climate change adaptation, Descrição: The Natura 2000 network of protected sites aims to halt the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystem services in the EU, and features prominently in the environmental policy of the European Union. However, in the Natura sites the pursuit of these goals relies heavily on legal-institutional and scientific knowledge, and little room is left for the building up of adaptive capacity based also on local knowledge. This means that communities there residing become ?interested parties? where they could be also ?agents of change?. This project intends to contribute to fill in this gap in a two-fold way: (1) by turning local knowledge into a long-term asset for climate change adaptation, by preparing a ?memory bank? of water-related practices and trades that can be critically analysed, combined and integrated with other types of knowledge; (2) by helping to integrate adaptation into current routines through the sharing, in both vertical and horizontal workshops, of local knowledge and social memories, as a way to increase mutual awareness among different types of knowledge. The project purports to address these aspects, responding to the need for developing more detailed regional information on the impacts of climate change, through a bottom-up descriptive approach. It will do so by selecting in each of the 3 countries (Portugal, France and Greece) 1 important and extensive coastal protected site for studying local knowledge of biodiversity relevant topics, social memory of water-related local trades and practices, and social memory of forms of tying social relations to the use of local resources, and places. The traditional trades focused include fishing, shell-fish and seaweed collection, uses of the land in the shoreline, and uses of seeds and plants in everyday and medicinal practices. The project is organized in three main phases, a first one for gathering scientific and local information, a second for developing in-depth case-studies to access local knowledge and social memories and constructing the memory bank and respond to specific research questions, and a third phase of archiving, dissemination and discussion of the results with the local communities and key stakeholders. Throughout the project, several activities will ensure the management and broad scientific dissemination of the results. The methods to be used for the case studies include open interviews, press analysis and a questionnaire. The interviews will use the innovative methods of recorded walking interviews and recorded walking memories. The case-studies address two main groups of socio-psychological questions. The first regards some of the persistent controversies about the nature of local knowledge and the results of its encounters with both scientific and legal knowledge, and will look at what are the conflicts as well as the adaptive resources that emerge from these encounters. The second regards the articulation of social representations and place attachment. A survey will examine how place relations are associated to specific practices and representations.   PACHELBEL - Policy Addressing Climate Change and Learning about Consumer Behaviour and Everyday Life, Descrição: At the heart of this project lies the development, trialling and operationalisation of a tool (STAVE), designed to support the work of policy-making for sustainability in real-world settings. The tool will support processes of knowledge brokerage, promoting the appropriate application of existing research findings, and the generation of new knowledge which is focused on specific policy objectives. In substantive terms, the project responds to recent work on sustainable consumption, which has provided compelling arguments about the difficulties entailed in seeking to address anthropogenic climate change by attempting to shift patterns of consumer behaviour. The project will take the form of a series of collaborative problem-focused interventions with policy-makers which will engage with their current work in these areas. STAVE will allow these policy-makers to examine the nature and validity of assumptions about human sensibilities, reasoning and action that are incorporated into the development of policy. The project will yield detailed guidance on how best to utilise STAVE across a variety of organisational and policy-specific environments.   VULSACO - VULnerability of SAndy COast to climate change and anthropic pressure, Descrição: Climate change induced vulnerability is defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as the combination of sensitivity to climatic variations, probability of adverse climate change, and adaptive capacity. For each of these components of vulnerability, formal indices can be constructed and combined. Methods of aggregating across sectors and scales have begun to be applied to climate change. However, substantial methodological challenges remain, in particular estimating the risk of adverse climate change impacts and interpreting relative vulnerability across diverse situations. As stated by the IPCC (Watson et al., 1997), the ?coastal systems should be considered vulnerable to changes in climate?. In these areas, amongst the most serious impacts of sea-level rise (Nicholls, 1996) are erosion and marine inundation. Thus, the coast of metropolitan France, being composed of 31% sandy coasts, is potentially vulnerable. Hence, the objectives of the VULSACO project are to: (1) assess indicators of vulnerability to climate change for low-lying linear sandy coastal systems, from the shore to the hinterland, facing undergoing climate change and anthropic pressure until the 2030s; and (2) identify the aggravating or improving effect of human pressure on this vulnerability. The coastal system will be defined by its morphology, its physical characteristics and its land use.   Representações sociais do corpo, da beleza e da saúde, Descrição: O presente projeto, na sua primeira parte é do tipo descritivo e comparativo, envolve a descrição do conteúdo e da estrutura das RS sobre o corpo. E tem uma segunda parte, que visa examinar o efeito do contexto interacional na RS de um objeto, envolvendo um delineamento próximo do experimento de campo, onde a manipulação da instrução que antecede perguntas sobre os significados que participantes atribuem ao corpo, permitirá simular o efeito da interação (do contexto) na diferenciação das RS. Participam 200 adolescentes, estudantes universitárias, divididas entre alunas de cursos da área da saúde e de cursos da área estética. Para o diagnóstico das representações sociais do corpo será utilizado o teste de associação livre. O diagnóstico do conhecimento prévio, o grau de contato e as práticas dos respondentes em relação aos objetos de RS estudados; envolve um questionário auto-administrado. A análise dos dados obtidos pelo teste de associação livre é lexicográfica, com o emprego dos programas informáticos Evocation 2000 (Vergès, Scano e Junique, 2002) e Similitude 2000 (Vergès, Junique, Barbry, Scano e Zeliger, 2002). A análise dos questionários envolve descrição estatística (freqüência relativa, escore numérico), estatística relacional (qui-quadrado, teste de t, ANOVA), com o programa SPSS. A análise do material textual das questões abertas ocorrerá através do software ALCESTE e SPAD.   A Difusão Científica da Aids Junto a Adolescentes do Ensino Médio, Descrição: Descrição: Este projeto faz parte de um projeto integrado, denominado "Representações sociais de ciência e tecnologia no contexto da divulgação científica", que visa examinar a contribuição da teoria das representações sociais na divulgação e apreensão de conteúdos científicos, por parte de setores das populações catarinense e paulistana. Ele envolve as temáticas do meio ambiente, da prevenção da aids e das tecnologias de rejuvenescimento; e tem como objetivo analisar a estrutura das representações sociais sobre ciência e tecnologia, e diagnosticar o nível de alfabetização científica nestes três contextos. O projeto em questão (relativo à aids), objetiva o estudo do processo de popularização do conhecimento científico sobre a AIDS através de vídeo documentário. Entende-se que a compreensão deste processo traria benefícios para a prevenção desta epidemia, na medida que a posse de um conhecimento mais aprofundado desta doença pode ter mais impacto que as mensagens preventivas de natureza mais sintética. Pergunta-se sobre a possibilidade de transferência de conhecimento científico sobre a aids, através do vídeo documentário, sem que haja comprometimento com a quantidade e qualidade das informações difundidas.
