Middle managerial work as a source of emancipation and alienation, Descrição: This project examines the experience of middle management through the concept of boundary work, characterized as the work of negotiating between multiple roles in the interstices of organizational groups. Through an ethnographic study of a Brazilian accounting firm, we explore the ambivalent experience of boundary work as characteristic of professional middle managerial workers. Our managers described themselves as proactive and reflexive agents, on the one hand, yet also as lacking autonomy and a sense of belonging, on the other. We examine this tension as a contrast between forces of emancipation (i.e. sense of mastery, autonomy, empowerment and reflexivity) and alienation (i.e. fatigue, lack of self-determination, and detachment from their profession and coworkers). We discuss these forces and their implications for managerial work in the light that, in our findings, managers routinely shift between being agential and reflexive mediators (boundary subjects) and interfacing and coordination devices (boundary objects).. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Alunos envolvidos: Mestrado acadêmico: (1) . , Integrantes: Ricardo Daniel Meurer Azambuja - Coordenador / Gazi Islam - Integrante., Número de produções C, T & A: 1

On the nature of work and occupations, Descrição: This research project investigates the nature of work and occupations, as well as the organizations in which people work, aiming at understanding the current state and the evolution of such phenomena vis-à-vis social, demographic and technological changes. This project includes, among others, topics such as group dynamics, the changing nature of work, workplace, careers and professions, leadership and its substitutes, organizational change, gender studies, new organizational forms, novel organizing practices, experiences of work (ex. meaning of work, (in-)equality )etc.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Ricardo Daniel Meurer Azambuja - Coordenador.

MANAGERIAL DEVIANCE AS A RESPONSE TO STRUCTURAL STRAIN, Descrição: This project conceptualizes deviance as the violation of norms that can support both positive and negative organizational outcomes, a possibility deriving from structural strain perspective on deviance, yet not empirically demonstrated or theoretically developed. We explore how the ambivalence of deviance plays out as a response to contradictory pressures and opportunities across different organizational levels, grounding our theorizing around ambivalent deviances in thick description to examine how deviance unfolds at the micro-level in a professional setting. We draw upon an ethnographic study in a Brazilian accounting firm, showing how middle managers maintain deviant practices as competing constructions of organizational reality. Whereas previous literature acknowledges middle managers? ephemeral transgressions in exceptional moments, the current study examines the different forms of recurrent structural strain felt by middle managers and how these are reflected in everyday, ongoing practices of ambivalent deviance. By examining three exemplary cases, we advance a multifaceted conceptualization of ambivalent deviance involving qualitatively distinct transgressions, detailing their antecedents, mechanisms and varying relation to, and level of detachment from norms, as well as their consequent escalating risks and implications for organizational functioning. We contribute to the understanding of deviance by nuancing previous dichotomous views conceptualizing it as either positive or negative, showing how ambivalent deviance both reconciles contradictory constraints and consolidates middle managers? power over and beyond their official jurisdictions.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Ricardo Daniel Meurer Azambuja - Coordenador.

The Agency and Politics of Middle Managers? Boundary Work, Descrição: Current explorations of middle managers? work at and on symbolic boundaries have focused on the maintenance or crossing of largely monolithic boundaries, but have placed less emphasis on the plurality of boundaries and the ways in which they are constructed. Focusing on boundaries as ?dependent variables,? we conduct an ethnographic study of a Brazilian audit firm, examining middle managers? construction, maintenance and adjustment of boundaries. Our study reveals how middle managers fluidly manipulate boundaries? visibility and permeability to achieve specific purposes, and how different configurations of these elements generates various types of boundaries. Moreover, we show the dual orientation of middle managers? boundary work ? both obstructing and facilitating boundary-crossing ? demonstrating that, in contrast to prior research findings, both orientations can be enacted by the same actor according to his or her purposes. We propose future research exploring agency, power and plasticity as key issues linking existing scholarship on middle management with that on and boundary work.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Ricardo Daniel Meurer Azambuja - Coordenador.

On agriculture and permaculture work and organizing, Descrição: This project uses the concept of imaginaries to understand how permaculture work and organizing provide alternative ways of organizing in response to the current environmental crisis. We argue that imaginaries provide ways of organizing that combine ideas and concrete practices, imagining organizational alternatives by enacting new forms of collective practice. Permaculture movements, because of their combination of local, situated design practices and underlying social and political philosophies, provide an interesting case of imaginaries that make it possible to reimagine the relations between humans, non-human species and the natural environment. We identify and describe three imaginaries found in permaculture movements, conceiving of permaculture, respectively, as a technical design practice, a holistic life philosophy, and an intersectional social movement. These imaginaries open up possibilities for political and social alternatives to industrially organized agriculture, but are also at risk of various forms of ideological co-optation based on their underlying social premises. We discuss our perspective in terms of developing the concept of imaginaries in relation to organizational scholarship, particularly in contexts where fundamental relations between humans and the natural environment must be reimagined. Moreover, we also explore other aspects related to agriculture and permaculture work and organizing which are emerging from our fieldwork in France, East Africa, Japan and others. The objective is to provide better understandings of labor and life on and of the land while calling into question dominant paradigms.. , Situação: Em andamento; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Ricardo Daniel Meurer Azambuja - Coordenador / Giuliano Martiniello - Integrante., Número de produções C, T & A: 1

Creativity: can artistic perspectives contribute to management questions?, Descrição: This study aims to mirror the artistic and managerial conceptions of creativity. Although there are shared points in both applications, however, deep-seated and radically opposed traits account for the divergence between the two fields as shown in a first conceptual paper (Bourguignon and Dorsett, 2003). Two surveys have been conducted to collect representations of creative persons among managers (in France) and artists (in the UK), using a method borrowed from social psychology.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Ricardo Daniel Meurer Azambuja - Coordenador., Número de produções C, T & A: 1
