  Analysis and Integration of Multiword Expressions in Speech and Translations, Descrição: This project aims to investigate techniques, resources and protocols for evaluating and integrating models of multiword expression (MWE) processing into machine translation and automatic speech recognition technology. MWEs like nominal compounds (machine learning, weapons of mass destruction) and verb­particle constructions (break down, clear up) are a challenge for current language technology. They often require additional knowledge for correct computational interpretation due to their often opaque and idiomatic semantics. For instance, failing to recognize that an MWE like kick the bucket needs to be interpreted as a unit (to die) may lead to incorrect translations. The AIM­WEST project addresses the automatic treatment of MWEs focusing on Portuguese, English and French, and on Portuguese↔English, French↔English and Portuguese↔French translation.   Simplificação Textual de Expressões Complexas, Descrição: The goal of this project is to investigate and develop techniques, resources and tools for automatic text simplification. The idea is to rewrite texts making them more accessible and easier to understand to a larger audience. Our focus is in lexical simplification, where more difficult words are replaced by more familiar synonyms, and we are interested in lexical simplification of complex expressions (such as compound nouns like brain teaser, access road, nut case) which require a high degree of precision to maintain the original meaning and result in a natural and readable alternative. Our target groups include children as first or second language learners, and texts in both Brazilian Portuguese and English. The aim is to help reduce the literacy deficit that is an unfortunate reality of a large part of the Brazilian population, by means of resources and tools that facilitate the understanding of a text.   CNPq/MIT Cognitive Computational Models of Natural Languages for Assessing Language Competency, Descrição: In this project, we seek to investigate the influence of language factors in low literacy and pathologies, focusing on Alzheimer?s Disease (AD). Although there seem to have a link between factors like frequency and age of acquisition and strategies employed in processing, studies on these interactions are still scarce, and in particular for Brazilian Portuguese there is still much to investigate. The project includes activities such as gathering existing linguistic and psycholinguistic resources for Portuguese and pilot investigation of adequacy of resources in other languages for constructing database for Brazilian Portuguese; application of psycholinguistic tasks to group target and control groups; analysis of psycholinguistic experiments; development of scores for factors using for instance Logistic Regression and Bayesian models; investigation of correlation between factors and low literacy and AD. A thorough investigation of these factors can help in achieving a better understanding of their links to issues as dissimilar and important as illiteracy and AD. As a result of the proper detection of the linguistic capacity of an individual for the former, a consequent adjustment of language can lead to a more efficient learning experience. In the case of AD, detection of language deficits can lead to an early diagnosis and potentially to a higher quality of life.   Usando o Processamento de Linguagem Natural para Aprendizagem e Reconhecimento de Vocabulário, Descrição: Subprojeto de projeto Processamento de Linguagem Natural Simbólico, Estatístico e Cognitivo O Processamento da Linguagem Natural (PLN) é uma área da Ciência da Computação que investiga problemas de geração e compreensão automática de línguas humanas, e sua aplicação é em sistemas computacionais que incluem processamento textual, tais como sistemas de Tradução Automática, Corretores Ortográficos, Sistemas de Perguntas e Respostas. A performance destes depende de recursos lingüísticos eletrônicos - como dicionários, tesauros e ontologias - precisos e de alta cobertura. Tais recursos não são completos, dada a magnitude das linguagens naturais e sua natureza dinâmica, com novas palavras e construções aparecendo constantemente, limitando o sucesso de uma aplicação de PLN devido a palavras e especialmente expressões compostas (por exemplo ?parada de ônibus) não contidas nestes recursos. Visto que a geração e extensão de recursos lingüísticos manualmente é cara, demorada e sujeita a erros, investigam-se métodos automáticos ou semi-automáticos para a geração desses recursos, a partir de grandes bases de texto (corpora). Durante a disciplina os participantes estudarão varias técnicas para a aquisição automática de informações lingüísticas a partir de corpora, e utilizarão estes conhecimentos adquiridos em atividades práticas de implementação, que consolidarão este aprendizado. Desta forma, o objeto de aprendizagem proposto constitui-se de uma ferramenta eletrônica modular e reutilizável onde a estarão implementadas varias destas técnicas de aquisição automática de conhecimento, proporcionando aos estudantes um ambiente onde podem realizar as tarefas práticas. Os modelos propostos são psicologica e lingüisticamente compatíveis com estudos feitos sobre o processo de aquisição humana da linguagem.   Recuperação de Informações Multilíngües, Descrição: O objetivo deste projeto de pesquisa é contribuir para o desenvolvimento da Recuperação de Informações Multilíngües envolvendo a língua Portuguesa. A motivação vem da crescente necessidade que experienciamos atualmente de explorar documentos em outros idiomas. Com a disseminação da Internet, a distância física entre o usuário e a informação foi removida. Contudo, a barreira da linguagem ainda precisa ser ultrapassada. A pesquisa nesta área tem se desenvolvido rapidamente desde o final dos anos 90. Apesar dos recentes avanços, ainda existem muitos aspectos não explorados, em especial sobre a utilização da língua portuguesa. Espera-se como resultado deste projeto gerar um sistema de recuperação de informações que aceite consultas na língua portuguesa e busque documentos em inglês.   Aprendizado Autônomo de Linguagem ? Facilitando a Interação Homem-Máquina, Descrição: Subprojeto de projeto Processamento de Linguagem Natural Simbólico, Estatístico e Cognitivo. Avanços recentes em tecnologias da informação, processamento de linguagem natural (PLN), inteligência artifical e áreas correlatas resultaram em correspondentes desenvolvimentos em robótica e na possibilidade de sua aplicação no assessoramento ou até substituição de seres humanos em suas tarefas diárias. Robôs logo serão capazes de contribuir em tarefas desagradáveis, perigosas, confusas, pouco gratificantes ou monótonas para seres humanos. Tem se observado que um robô com uma morfologia que se aproxima a do ser humano deixa o processo de interação mais natural e amigável, visto que um dos meios de comunicação pode ser a linguagem falada e corporal, expressões faciais, e gestos [BRE 1999a, BRE 1999, MIW 2001]. Robôs com estas características permitem que seres humanos monitorem, ensinem e deleguem tarefas mais facilmente. Seres humanos e animais mais evoluídos desenvolveram uma forma de comunicação simbólica com regras sofisticadas de composição e associação para descrever características do meio ambiente, eventos ocorridos no tempo, etc. Esta forma de comunicação é chamada genericamente de linguagem. A comunicação por linguagem não é só importante na relação homem-máquina, mas também na relação entre máquinas. Quando um robô adquire uma informação importante sobre um objeto específico no meio ambiente, ele deve enviar esta informação para os membros envolvidos, para que estes possam re-avaliar seus objetivos, adequando-se às necessidades correntes do grupo. A interação permite com que sistemas robóticos possam atuar de forma eficiente, especialmente em ambientes inóspitos. Por exemplo, em um edifício em chamas, um time de robôs que ajuda numa tarefa de resgate, deve comunicar-se constantemente para informar seu progresso.   Developing High Quality Data Resources for Research on Language Acquisition, Descrição: Explaining the enigma of child language acquisition is one of the main challenges facing cognitive science, and of interest to research fields as diverse as linguistics, psychology, biology and computer science. Although all normal children succeed in learning their native tongue, no theory has yet succeeded in accounting for the many complexities of language learning. For example, while some theories maintain that children are born with a genetic mechanism that facilitate and constrain language learning (e.g. Noam Chomsky) others assert that language learning results only from general cognitive abilities and the interaction between learners and their surrounding communities (e.g. Michael Tomasello). A key to testing and evaluating such competing theories is a large collection of data containing childrens speech. One of the most important advances in the study of language acquisition was thus the creation of the CHILDES database (MacWhinney, 2000; http://childes.psy.cmu.edu). By now the standard corpus in the area, CHILDES provides 300MB of transcript data of interactions between children and parents over 25 human languages, as well as digitized audio and video linked to the transcripts. It has been used in over 1,500 studies in (computational) child language acquisition. Although it is arguably the most useful database currently available in the area, CHILDES has two major short-comings. First, its relatively small size limits its usefulness for many research purposes. Second, its raw format makes it very difficult to use. Without tags for part-of-speech, syntactic parses and predicate-argument information, researchers are forced to devote long hours of hand analysis to locating and coding the information relevant to them.   Noun phrase agreement and coordination, Descrição: O Projeto esta investigando os principios de concordancia que se aplicam a coordenacao de sintagmas nominais, em linguas como Ingles e Portugues. Diferentes principios e conjuntos de atributos sao utilizados para realizar a concordancia dependendo do contexto da coordenacao: -O meu pai e (meu) amigo esteve presente nos momentos mais importantes da minha vida -O meu pai e (meu) amigo foram ao jogo de futebol. onde o verbo deve concordar em numero com o sujeito coordenado, de forma apropriada para a interpretacao desejada.   Politeness in Cypriot Greek, Descrição: Em varios estudos empiricos foram constatados o usos de frases formulaicas para expressar 'Polidez' na linguagem humana. Exemplos destas sao expressoes como 'Could you please ...' and 'Would you mind ...' em Ingles. Um estudo de corpora do Grego Cipriota mostrou que ha uma forte relacao entre a escolha da expressao e outros fatores nao-linguisticos como classe social e relacao dos interlocutores, idade, sexo, ambiente da interacao, etc. Este projeto visou produzir uma formulacao teorica destas observacoes e implementacao da mesma em uma gramatica computacional do Grego Cipriota de maneira a incorporar a natureza probabilistica das mesmas.   Multiword Expressions, Descrição: O objetivo deste projeto era investigar o fenomeno de Expressoes de Multiplas Palavras, como idiomas, substantivos compostos, expressoes de verbos e particulas, que apresentam dificuldades para sistemas de Processamento de Linguagem Natural. No escopo deste projeto foram desenvolvidos tratamentos, metodos e ferramentas necessarios para possibilitar que sistemas de PLN possam lidar com eles de uma maneira mais apropriada.
