Cost-effective observation methodology to assess seal population sizes using unmanned aerial vehicle and automatic image analysis, Descrição: [EN] The abundance estimation of ice breeding seals (harp and hooded) and coastal seals (grey and harbour) are based on aerial photographic surveys and manual inspection of aerial photographs. Photo surveys in remote areas (the Arctic) are expensive and the logistics have become increasingly difficult during the last years. Manual analysis of the images is extremely time consuming and costly, and involves subjective human interpretation by trained experts. The Norwegian Computing Center (NR) will focus on developing methodology for automating the process of counting seals from aerial images. This will be achieved through the development of new image analysis and pattern recognition techniques tailored to detect seals in digital color images. NR will also investigate the potential of thermal infrared sensors that extract temperature characteristics of the imaged objects. Several partner institutions are involved in the project. Monitoring and mapping of environmental gradients using Sentinel data in combination with supplemental data, Descrição: [EN] Traditionally, the aim of using remote sensing in the context of nature conservation and environmental monitoring / ecosystem management has been to classify remotely sensed data into e.g. vegetation or land cover classes. Mapping discrete types of nature however is already challenging when conducted manually due to the fractal characteristic of nature and the very often gradual changes in pattern. For that reason vegetation mapping using satellites like Landsat often results in mapping products with limited benefit when applied to complex and heterogeneous vegetation cover. The main objective of this project is to develop and advance a novel approach to remote sensing, which focuses on monitoring basic environmental gradients and properties (covering physical, chemical and biological components as well as their interactions), rather than discrete mapping of vegetation classes. Partner: Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA). Financing: ESA/Prodex.. , Situação: Concluído; Natureza: Pesquisa. , Integrantes: Maciel ZORTEA - Integrante / Arnt-Brre Salberg - Coordenador.

Hyperspectral imaging Network, Descrição: [EN] HYPER-I-NET was a four-year Marie Curie Research Training Network (RTN) designed to build an interdisciplinary European research community focusing on hyperspectral imaging. The theme of the network is at the confluence of heterogeneous disciplines, such as sensor design including optics and electronics, aerospace engineering, remote sensing, geosciences, computer sciences, signal processing and Earth observation related products. Dr. Zortea was integrated in a research effort led by Prof. Antonio Plaza, oriented towards the definition and implementation of advanced hyperspectral image processing techniques, in the context of remote sensing applications. Tropical forest monitoring in Tanzania, Descrição: [EN] Tropical forest monitoring in Tanzania is challenging due to frequent and partial cloud cover. Also, there are large seasonal variations in the spectral response of vegetation, due to the rain seasons and dry periods. This means that detecting forest changes simply by classifying two satellite images taken a few years apart, and compute the difference, will not work well in practice. We are using a Hidden Markov Model approach to address these and other challenges in order to do forest mapping and forest change detection. The method is based on using a large time series of images that are processed automatically.
