Sergio Brito Mendes

Bachelor in Physics from Universidade de São Paulo (1982), Master in Physics from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1991), Master in Optical Sciences from University of Arizona (1993), and Ph.D. degree in Optical Sciences from University of Arizona (1997). He is currently a Full Professor in Physics at the University of Louisville (USA) working on the following areas: photonics, integrated optics, spectroscopy, lasers, biosensors, spectroelectrochemistry, passive and active planar waveguides, optical fibers, optical amplifiers, fiber lasers, plasmonic devices, and molecular/biological films. In the last 5 years Prof. Mendes research efforts has focused on integrated optics and plasmonic nanostructures for studies in biomolecular films and interface phenomena, on the spectroscopic investigation of the physical/chemical properties of biomolecular structures, and on the integration of nano-structured photonic devices with molecular assemblies for selective and sensitive transduction in chemical and biological materials. Prof. Mendes has pioneered the development of single-mode integrated optical waveguides as a tool for broadband spectroscopy of ultra-thin films, and recently introduced electro-active waveguides for innovative work in spectroelectrochemistry of proteins and other redox couples. Prof. Mendes has published more than 66 articles, 3 book chapters, 2 invited articles, 5 patents at USPTO, +700 citations, h-17, and has been invited for many scientific lectures around the world (USA, Japan, Germany, France, Russia, Brazil, South Korea, Spain, and others). He was a Director of NP Photonics, a high-tech startup company developing optical amplifiers and fiber lasers. He has been a Visiting Professor in Japan and Russia at several occasions, has served as an Associated Editor for the Optical Society of America, and since 2004 has worked for the National Science Foundation as a technical reviewer of research grant proposals. He co-organized the International Chemical Congress of the Pacific Basin Societies held in Hawaii in December 2015. Prof. Mendes has received several grant awards from NSF, NIH, NASA, KSEF, and other funding agencies in the USA. In 2011 he received the Award for Outstanding Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity offered by the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Louisville.
